Door Stopper Fantasy

I use the term door stopper fantasy to refer to authors who have written a series of fantasy novels that are typically around 1,000 pages each and have characters that typically develop over time throughout the long series of books. Some of the more prominent door stopper series, that I know of, are Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time and Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth. Can you think of some others?

Hi JB,

George R. R. Martin has a tremendous series A Song of Ice and Fire, but it is as yet incomplete, and readers are waiting for the fifth in the series, and have been for several years.

The scope of the books is tremendous, though the writing is patchy at times. But it is the characterizations and the intensely political plot that holds my interest.

Worth the price of admission. <smile>

Tolkein, of course.

The Edding's "Belgariad" which continues on in the "Mallorean" series.

Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings is excellent and promises to take ages to finish.

China Mieville, "Perdido Street Station" -- I think there are 2 or 3 books in the series, but PSS is the first of them.

Scott Lynch, "The Lies of Locke Lamora" -- seven books in the series, all around the 1,000 page mark.

I just finished it the other day, and I quite enjoyed it. When I finished the last page I thought to myself "I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out!"

Janny Wurts has the excellent "Wars of Light and Shadow" series that fits the "doorstopper fantasy" description.
