Question about Kindle, Calibre & Canada

The Kindle has everything i want except Amazon. I don't plan on buying any books from them, I live in the boonies of northern Ontario Canada so I don't even have 3G around here and I already have an extensive library of unread books but most are PDF or EPUB. How much of a PITA is it to use Calibre to convert my books to read on the Kindle and what quality of reading experience should i expect? Also, can someone describe for me the Kindle's catalog features? Can i still use the catalog it if none of my books come from Amazon?

Basically I am leaning toward the Kindle 3 because of the text quality, it's low price and because it appeals to me aesthetically.

Thanks!

If you are leaning towards the Kindle you might find the answer you are looking for in the Kindle forums.

I have not used Calibre but have read that it is very easy to use for conversion.

The kindle has a COLLECTIONS feature. But no sub-collections. So, you can create a SciFi and a mystery and a biography, etc collection and add books to them, any books not just the one you buy from Amazon. It actually is only an index - it does not physically move books to folders with those names. It is like a Windows shortcut - a pointer. So you can actually add one book to multiple collections. For instance, you grab a new book or two. Some folks have a To-be-read collection but the book is also SciFi - it can be added to both collections.

Thanks for the collections info - that's perfect. And i'll ask in the Kindle forum too.
