650 - touchy, touchy....

Got a new 650 last week, moved up from the 505. Like the thinner body and the readability of the screen is better. But, I'm finding that it's easy to accidentally skip ahead or back by inadvertently touching the screen. It's quite sensitive and I'm constantly having to re-find where I was because pages have raced forward or back due to accidentally touching the screen. A pain.
I also have the fancy cover with the light. It's nice but seems to make this issue even worse. Seems easier to avoid unintentional touches with a naked 650.
Any touch-screen vets have advice on this? Do you "get used to it?" Can you turn the touchscreen off, make it less sensitive?
Thanks for any suggestions

I have a 650 with the light cover and I don't find the cover make it easier to touch the screen. Also, I've not found it a problem (overall) touching the screen and moving on. Yes, I've accidentally touched the screen a few times so far.

I have not seen a way to change the sensitivity of the touch. But it is rather accurate and I never actually had to set it up like you do on the old touch layer.

I also have a 650 with the lighted and have not found this to be a problem. Like Jon, I've accidentally turned a page a time or two, but not often enough to be annoying.

One thing, I'm sure you already know is that if you turn a page and hold your finger down, it'll skim through many pages until you lift up your finger. I've actually done this once or twice by accident as well, but it was when I was reading in bed and nodding off to sleep. So I can't blame that on Sony--the device is working as intended.

I agree.

For practical everyday reading I find I use the buttons to turn pages much more than the touch screen. Sometimes I find that pages are turned accidently due to a piece of clothing or stray finger brushing the screen. On one occasion I powered up the Reader and the pages began to flip uncontrollably, simply because of an apparent cat hair on the edge of the screen..!

I wish there was an option to disable the touch screen except when menus, lists or the home screen were active. This would prevent accidental page turns. Possibly pressing "option + zoom" could toggle the touch screen, so that the dictionary and "notes" could be active when needed. This would likely extend the battery life, too..!

for my part, i'm really enjoying the wonderful sensitivity of the touch features on the 650, because on the 600 my biggest complain was that the touch was not sensitive enough!

My most common problem is swiping the screen to turn the page and instead bringing up the dictionary for whatever word was under my finger when I swiped.

i suppose that should only happen if you accidentally double-tapped while swiping... i usually press down firmly while touching the screen or swiping, i havent seen that yet.

Yeah, I often hold the device with one hand and try to swipe with my thumb, without dropping the device. If I use my free hand for the swipe, no problems.

I hold with my right hand and swipe with my right thumb at the bottom right corner....so far no accidental presses.

That's exactly what I do, and I keep popping up the dictionary. You must have amazing thumbs!

Heh. I can safely say I've never been complimented on my thumbs before.

I have to try hard to tap twice with my thumb. A little swipe of less than 1/2 an inch turns the page.

Similar problems with the 350: dictionary popping up too easily when swiping the pages, accidentally bringing up the page advance screen and jumping ahead in the story.

The screen seems to be very sensitive near the page numbers at the bottom of the screen. A light touch on them will bring up the page advance screen.

I just bookmark pages often so it's easier to get back to where exactly I was.

my thumb issue with the 650 is that I usually have both thumbs near bottom of screen. (You can swipe a page turn on a diagonal or even a slight curve and it still recognizes). I can usually even highlight text with just my thumbs. But when I want to type in a quick note after a highlight, the stupid "by drawing/by keyboard" dialog box usually appears at top of screen, requiring me to move my hand positions to reach the buttons on it with my thumbs. Its pretty much the only dialog for which I'm forced to move my hands. Everything else appears near bottom of screen, within thumb reach.

Despite some of the occasional hiccups in the system, it is still quite handy to have a touch screen with the E-Ink Pearl clarity.

I can't believe how handy highlighting is on the PRS 650 with a clear and responsive touch screen.

How many of you use the page turn buttons on the bottom over using the touch screen to turn pages?

May I be the second to say, doreenjoy, you have lovely thumbs.

I sometimes get the dictionary while turning a page. I do not find it a problem when balanced against the astounding clarity and usefullness of the 650's touch screen.

Really, amazing thumbs, doreenjoy.
