Kindle with Linux
I am having difficulty with Calibre recognising my Kindle and despite searching the forum I could find no ideas to help me.
Looking at the FAQ in the manual, it was recommended to put into a terminal the following: grep SYSFS_DEPRECATED /boot/config-`uname -r` and I should get: CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 is not set. I get something very similar:- # CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 is not set Is the hash sign important? If not what else should I do, please? |

# is a comment for the config file. In this case, it means the same thing as CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 isn't set as a kernel option during compile which is apparently what you're looking for.

I don't have any problems (Ubuntu 10.04). I've got Calibre 0.6.42 installed which I downloaded from the repository with the synoptic package manager.

@Jodelman: What distribution are you using, how did you install calibre, and do you roll your own kernel?
Do you at least see something in dmesg or lsusb when plugging your Kindle (Forgetting calibre, for now)? |

If you don't see *anything* pertaining to a new USB device when you plug it in in dmesg, and you're using a ubuntu-supplied kernel, I'd assume something's wrong with your USB cord/plug.
Can you get any other USB mass storage device working on this system? Do your Kindle gets detected on another computer/OS? Does the Kindle switch to the "Connected to USB" screen? |

I have no problem with other mass storage devices on Ubuntu. I still have Windows XP on another partition and downloaded Calibre on that to see if it worked. It did, perfectly.
When I plug the Kindle in on Ubuntu, I get a screen on it saying that it is connected to the USB and to eject it if I want to continue using it. In either state if I try to download a book to it, I get the message "Cannot send:No Device is Connected" |

you probably have a kindle 3 and you are using the completely outdated calibre package provided by ubuntu. UNinstall it and install the calibre binary from the calibre website.

Thanks for the help. I did as suggested and uninstalled the repository copy and installed from the website. Calibre now playing nicely with the Kindle.
Great program. Thanks again. |

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't have this problem. It installs version 0.7.18 by default.
