pc kindle book to sony prs-650 ?

Hi
I'm new here so sorry if the question has been asked before.

I have just downloaded Amazons kindle for pc, and purchased a book for my wife.

How do I get the book onto my sony ereader ? or have I made a Boo Boo! and the book cannot be transferred to other readers ?

I assumed it would just be a file that I could convert to epub.
I have Calibre and use that for my book organising.

Your book will almost certainly have Amazon's drm. If so, Calibre cannot convert it unless you free the book of the drm.

If you want to look in to freeing e-books of drm google ApprenticeAlf.

Once drm is removed, then Calibre can convert it to epub.

If the Kindle ebook has DRM, and most of them do, then no, you won't be able to change its format from mobi or azw or (shudder) Topaz to ePub until you remove the DRM. Sony readers use ePub, Kindles use mobi or azw.

I think you'll find that it is against MobileRead policy to discuss ways to remove DRM. However Apprentice Alf and private messages are your friends.

And you may get some help or pointers in the Sony forum.

Regards, Alex

PS. Sorry, I hadn't seen church mouse's post before I did mine; and I meant the calibre forum.

The tools_v2.0 bundle includes easy to use plug ins for Calibre that strip DRM (encryption) when you import to Calibre. Once DRM-free, Calibre can convert AZW to ePub. Apprentice Alf's Blog is always a good place to start for the DRM state of play, and don't forget to look in the comments.

Really? Did not know this.

And Apprentice Alf is indeed my friend. I haven't visited him in awhile though. Is this new?

The tools bundle has included a plug in for K4PC for a while. What is new in tools_v2.0 is detailed READMEs and plug ins for more DRM schemes (e.g. Adobe and B&N ePubs). As before, there are also stand-alone DRM stripping utilities.

Thanks guys, I have been playing around with what was recommended, and managed to do the DRM strip (well it came up as successful !), but still cannot get Calibre to recognise the stripped file ?

I was still using the old standalone methods, so this is great! They're up to v.2.1 now, btw...

I have calibre but I can't figure out where these tools can be downloaded from. Am I missing something very obvious?

eta-I figured it out on my own using a combination of forum searching and google.
