What Happened To The Pending Mobipocket Support?

Remember this? It was supposed to be real close. Have not heard even a whisper recently.

According to Irex's forum today it is 2 weeks away.

I really really want to believe them but I'm hoping it will be in time for my birthday at the very least. I was born on December 1st. I really wanted this feature, it was why I bought an Iliad last November and here I still wait.

I really wish this hadn't fallen in to the abyss. It was seen working at the expo in Paris and then they come up with more delays.

From posts I read, I don't think this can be faulted to iRex. It sounds to me that they have/had something they considered a working release version. They then had to submit it to Mobipocket for review. Mobipocket rejected it because of some technical issue, and the process starts over.

The thing that suprises me is, iRex seems to do a massive amount of internal testing. If it passed all that, but still wasn't good enough for mobipocket, they must be pretty damn picky.

I wish they weren't, I just want a bit of variety in what I can read and have waited a long time

Or maybe iRex doesn't test good enough? Seeing how things are going with the iLiad I would think this to be more applicable.

It will be soon!

There is an integration issue with Desktop Reader that was initially deemed non-blocking, but was raised in priority when we were close to release.
Rest assured that you will get this and that it will be great. I've personally read two full Mobipocket books on my iLiad already and it works really nice. The first version will not support dictionaries yet, but we are already developing that in parallel with good progress.

Mobipocket support on the iLiad is a really good move from iRex. With Amazon support behind them, I believe that Mobipocket could become really popular with e-ink readers in the future.

This is great news Matthijs.

My recent downloads from Manybooks have already been in the Mobipocket format. Does Mobipocket automatically justify text, or is that a function of the way the document is prepared?

Oh, and what did you read - anything interesting?

You are very cruel to tease those of us who are waiting like that Matthijs
But it's good to know that it's getting there and thanks for the info

Will the desktop reader be able to recognize the CF or MMC card? If not, most of us probably won't use that transfer method - I can't recall the last time I hear someone say they were storing all or most of their books in main memory.

If it does recognize it, I'll use it, but my experience with my Palm is that it is slooooow and I would likely use a direct transfer to CF anyway. I know that won't help for rss feeds, but I am unlikely to use the Iliad for that.

FWIW.

Many PC's have a cardreader build in. Otherwise, buy one (they are cheap. Sometimes come as an extra with a large capacity memory card)
Just get files from the internet and put them on the card. I often use Open Office to adapt documents for my iLiad. I save them as PDF files.
Maybe later we can use a webbrowser with/or a FTP program to get stuff from the internet directly to the iLiad.

I have an older machine and both the CF and MMC card need a reader plugged into a USB port to transfer files.

USB is almost essential these days. There are inexpensive PCI and PCMCIA cards that provide multiple USB 2 ports.
