Question about epub conversion to kindle.

I've been downloading books free books off the Internet. Most of them are in the epub format so I can read them on my iPad. I downloaded calibre and tried converting the books to the kindle format just so I could see what converted books look like. Unfortunately I have no way to preview the books. So I'll just ask here. When you convert from epub to kindle format do you retain the chapters, table of contents, ect? I tried converting a PDF for amazons format and it pretty much ruined the document.

I usually remove "spaces inbetween paragraphs", remove headers and remove footers.

TOC is a personal thing. Usually the epub links work, after the conversion to mobi, but not always.

cheers

You can actually preview them with Calibre's built in thingie. After converting, it will say on the main page something like "epub, mobi" etc (all the formats you've put it in), just click on the mobi and it opens up in the viewer.

Anyway though, it seems to be depend on the epub. I've had problems with bought epubs (from Baen and Fictionwise), but what I did was load them up in Sigil, save, then use Calibre and that fixed the problems.

I've converted epubs to mobi for friends using calibre with no problems (links, pagebreaks, etc. all look perfect). I used Kindle for PC (free download) to check the output because calibre's mobi viewer doesn't support page breaks.

Converting anything from a pdf is always pretty crappy.

Better yet, use Amazon's Kindle Previewer.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...cId=1000234621

Kindle Previewer is a much more accurate representation of the display on a true Kindle device and is therefore a much better app for testing files.

Kindle for PC (Mac, ...) is a full functioning reader, complete with bookmarks and a directory page. Its display is its own and not a match to Kindle hardware.
