Hi, everyone:
I want to be adventurous and install the hack before updating to the 3.0.3 software, but I have a few questions: 1st QUESTION: Worst case scenario: If I just copy the entire contents of my Kindle folder, will I be able to "copy" it back to restore if I brick my Kindle by accident? I know I can copy the "documents" folder (already have a backup), but what about the software? If it's not possible to somehow make a full backup of the software, where do I get a copy of it? At Amazon.com? does anyone know the name of the file for the K3 Wifi U.S.? 2nd QUESTION: Will I be "overwriting" the Kindle's fonts by installing the hack with the new fonts? Can I still access the old ones (along with the new ones), or will they be gone until I uninstall the hack for the fonts? And how difficult is it to change from font to font - is it the same as now (the "aA" button?)? Thank you for your help ![]() |

If you don't really want to hack your Kindle, just be *able to*, at a later date, you can simply install only the jailbreak. It won't change a thing, except enabling you to install custom updates.
But, to answer your questions about the fonts hack: * It probably won't brick your Kindle ![]() * At the very, very, very worst you might have to do a reset to factory defaults (but even in case of crappy fonts, that shouldn't be needed, a simple file to delete over usb and a restart will disable the hack), so backuping your documents folder is a good idea. (Actually, it's a good idea whether you want to hack your Kindle or not ![]() * It doesn't overwrite anything in the system, you'll still be able to access both the files themselves, and possibly the default font itself via the [Aa] menu (depending on your hack setup). Switching fonts *won't* be as easy as using the [Aa] menu, though. Check the thread in the dev subforum for details. Last edited by NiLuJe; 10-19-2010 at 10:50 PM. |

BAH! Coulda / shouda wouldda
![]() Everything went wonderfully UNTIL - I installed the font hack. Couldn't click once to get from a collection (which were all on my screen) to a list of books in the collection. Clicking once didn't get into the collection, clicking twice went into a random book in the collection. So I decided after playing around and not finding a resolution, to take the fonts hack off my Kindle ... But - I can't access the "Menu" command! If I click once, nothing happens, if I click again, I go straight to the "Home" screen! I have put the appropriate "uninstall" file in the root directory of the Kindle. I can get into the Kindle by USB cable with my computer. I have the Kindle collection manager which shows me that my collections are still there. Is there any way to get the Kindle to perform the "update" command without using the "menu" button? HELP please! Thanks in advance - |

It seems to happen with some fonts on a number of Kindles, and, given as I can't reproduce it on my Kindle, I have no idea why that is, or how to fix it (besides using other fonts)...
To disable the hack, remove/rename the linkfonts/auto file via USB, and restart your Kindle. (by using the autoreboot feature (ie. drop a blank reboot file in the linkfonts folder), or by holding the power switch ~15s). Last edited by NiLuJe; 10-19-2010 at 10:52 PM. |

Thank you! I had even lost my screen, Kindle was on but couldn't see the fonts ...
Everything's back now - whew! Back to normal - and I still have my amazing screensavers - so even with the moments of panic, it was worth it. I do love the new SS! Thank you so much for your help NiLuJe! |

So if I install the Jailbreak-fonthack-font set, this is the way to go back to the original font status? One more. I tried to install the previous version of JB on 3.0.2.. It was not smooth, the upgrade to 3.0.3 was even more scarier. Now the device is working. How can I see, that the JB is in place? Can the new JB simply applied on top of the previous? Many thanks, in advance, Dwo |

@Dworkyll:
* No, you'll have to uninstall the hack for that. Disabling it, just, well, disable it (ie. you'll be back to the default font, but your Kindle still won't really be in a fresh from factory state, system-wise). It's still installed. * There is no 'update' to be done for the JB. You install it once, and that's all. And what do you mean by 'smooth'? It's got to be the simplest update you'll ever see, I can't see how 'rough' it could be... o_O And, no, unless you look for it with a shell, the only way to know if the JB is installed is a custom update installing successfully instead of failing with a U007 error. |

Well. First I made a mistake(?), performing a reboot, and not the upgrade from the menu, after copying the bin file into the root. It noticed the update file, but failed to install. I guess this is normal. From the menu it got installed.
The process yielded a different error message, than the one described in the posts, and several restarts/reboots. This was the point I started to get scared. Then I put the 3.0.3 bin to the root, and after a few restarts with various length it turned back operational. I just wanted to check, wether the JB got installed or not. The only reason (so far) I'm interested in JB is to get(create) a fontpack with Gentium Book Basic. I do not know the HOW, just yet, but starts to learn where to look at, to learn. Any comment is welcome ![]() |
