help - Change the font to read lrf document

Hi, I installed the hack in my prs-300 (boroda) - works great and I love the clock! But now I was wondering if it’s possible to change the font to read lrf files, I really prefer this format to epub.
I seached around and din't found it, so problably that means that is not possible, but i would apreciate any help/confirmation on this.

P.S. I already put this question in another Thread but beause I notice it's an old one (problably "dead" ) I decided to try create a new one.

It is possible, but it is not user-friendly. Basically, you need to extract the firmware image using CRAMFSCK, update the font files, then create a new firmware image using MKCRAMFS. After that you update the checksum file and then you can flash the modified firmware. This process works was tested by me or my readers for 300, 500, 505, 600, 650 and 700. It should work for 350 with no problems. In order to modify 900, I am told you need to do it in Linux rather than Windows.

I wrote a guide for the whole process, but unfortunately, it's only in Czech language. If you feel brave, you can give Google Translate a try.

When replacing fonts for LRF/TXT/RTF, my SonyFont tool will be your friend:

To avoid brewing and flashing a own CRAMFS-image it should be possible to use borodas TESTMODE enabled russified Firmware here
And only mount --bind the neccessary font-files via the testmode script.

Pepaks SonyFontTool will be needed to prepare the replacement-fonts accordingly.

Just my two cents, not tested myself.

Thanks for the replies, I think for now I will stick with the original fonts. I took a look at the translated text and there were parts that I was confused (however I get the not user friendly part you refer) so I'm afraid to make a mistake and break my device. I guess im not that brave!

If you send me the base firmware and the fonts you want to use, I will build a custom firmware image for you to flash.

Thank you, I really want it a font with better contrast in my reader (I try to embend fonts with calibre but the files turn to big and slow), so if you could help me I will give it a try.

Actually i din't quite get the first part: I'm supposed to flash my reader with one existent hack? I already used boroda hack with my prs 300, but i cant find on the reader memory any file with "img" extension (or I just miss the meaning of that piece). Where exactly can I find the firmware?

About fonts I looked around and I think my favorites are gentium and cambria (just considered the ones i could get free), do you think one of thoose will work?

Attached Files
File Type: zip cambria.zip (2.04 MB, 312 views)

The .img file was a part of Boroda's flash archive. Just send me a link to the version of Boroda's hack that you want to use.

No problem, I use Gentium myself.

And for sans-serif and monospace you want to use which fonts? I can leave the default fonts in, of course.

Well... i suppose that ok, actually i never notice that my reader use more than one font (maybe because I like to convert all my books to lrf with the same specifications on calibre). What do I have to do to make sure the reader chose one font type and not the other?

Stoste, you may also want to consider using Calibre. You may be able to do things like change the font, margins, header, line spacing, ... in the books themselves.

Hi, I'm sorry to say that it din't work - I heard that it was nearly impossible to brick a sony reader- now I agree. but for a moment I though I had it and I felt very special!

Pepak, I really appreciate all the effort you had to help me - I was tempted by the result, but totally conscient that was a risky move. Thanks again!

Maybe I did some mistake but at first things occurred just like the first time I use boroda hack, so I decided to decribe how thing went to warn someone that wanted to use the same files:
1 - Unpacked the zip file Stoste - I got a Sony reader folder like the first time;
2- Connect the reader and put the folder in the root of the device (the "Reader" drive not the instaler); disconect the device
3 - The device starts running and apeared the inicial menu - I choose 6 to flash the image - and the process begin (exactly like I rememberer) -
4 - I got a message of error (something like "there was an error importing files". Here the problems begun:
5- I tried to connect the device - was no detected by the computer; so I rebooted and the flash menu apeared again: some process - same error, now I'm trapped in a loopping; connet the device again and it work: I decide to erase the sony reader folder then I was abble to format the internal memory, and have a fresh start.
6 - Just because I'm craisy ... I tried again: same error - some result - format internal memory - everything normal (deep breath ..)

Conclusions:
1- No cooler fonts: but now I appreciate more the ones I have
2- I learned a few thing about my reader, and lived strong emotions for an hour or so.
3 - The only bad result is that I started to dream about my new reader with pearl sreen (now with a device in perfect condition I can't justify it....)

That's strange. The updated firmware should work. Although I never updated the russified firmware, I always worked with the original FW instead.

Maybe that was that was the problem and the hack just work with the original firmware. I though that formating the device will turn it to "factory condition", but just erased my books and settings (like date and hour), the clock is still there.
