Unfortunately, quite often, you can't tell until you've already bought it, and you find your reading device is demanding some unlock code to read the book, or denying you permission to move it to another reader or change the format.

If you can be more specific about the format of the book, the reader being used, the source of the ebook purchase, and what you intend to do with it, we might be able to give you more help.
