What does the 3G do that the WIFI does not do?
This is probably a stupid question - I know that for the wifi Kindle you need to be in a wifi zone to download books from Amazon, but is that the only difference? Is there basic web access on both? Other than the downloading access, is there anything that the 3G does that the wifi version cannot do?

They are completely identical, except 3G has a 3G modem in it and a lifetime 3G contract with some company (Sprint? I don't know)

The WiFi ones literally have a slot for the modem inside. So it's the same hardware and all.

Yep, AT&T is covering the 3G modem part for the newer kindles. When I had a K1, it was Sprint.

The web browsing and everything is the same. I have a 3G one and when I'm in a good coverage area (even EDGE) it just feels like I'm on Wi-Fi, only I'm not.

If you have Wi-Fi everywhere already and want to save $50, it may be worth it.

I keep my Wispernet off 99% of the time anyhow so as long as you load up your kindle before you travel for an extended period of time then you should be good to go

Though for the extra money you can get book when ever you want...

I paid the extra $50 for the 3G because of the browser. I like to read the news sites a lot. I don't always have cell signal at college because T-Mobile stinks there and the Kindle can't connect to the school's wifi. So I use the 3G to browse/read news.

the 3G allows you to be tracked and spied on more effectively.it posts a log to amazon servers.

latitude and longitude files pinpoints you within a few metres

if you are believed to have committed a crime the police can access that log and find where you have been.

hackers found this out.

also amazon can see your files.

Well, the 3G can let me buy a book when I'm sitting on my pool deck.

WiFi doesn't because my router's signal doesn't broadcast that far out. I'd have get up and walk toward my house to buy my book.

Oh, absolutely!! AND they've recently installed tiny webcams that follow your ever move, and at night they sprout little wheels and go into your bedroom and broadcast whatever is going on in there.

Also, any books you read on the Kindle have embedded subliminal messages that make you want to buy more and more Kindle books, and eat McDonalds daily..........

This can also be used for your own benefit. I ordered a K3 to lend to my pastor. A searchable bible will be put on the device. Each Sunday I will lend the K3 to my pastor, who will use it for his sermon. After I return from a massage parlor or gambling den, the K3 will be retrieved.
