How to Merge Tags
Hi all, I searched for this already and couldn't find a way.
When you use web service to collect metadata, often you end up with lots of tags, more than the books in the library themselves. What would be useful is to merge multiple tags into one more general one, for example: Computer Science Computer: Languages Computer: Programming ... Computer: Desktop Applications These could all be merged into "Computer Science", meaning that all books with the others will take the first one and the others tag will be deleted. |

![]() In the Tag Browser, Right-click the tag name, select rename. It does not matter if the new name already exists, the Calibre crew though of everything and consolidates them properly ![]() |

You should be able to do that using the metadata search & replace- feature. In your example, use regular expression search mode, search for "Computer:\s+\w+" in the tags- field, replace with "Computer Science" (both times, obviously, without the quotes). Adjust accordingly for other cases.
Edit: theducks way looks to be easier. This is a classic case of "If you've got a hammer...". |

Thanks, I'll try!
I just actually learned two things: renaming tags merges them, and the Mark 1 Eyeball expression... thanks again! |

If you are going to rename a bunch then right click on a tag in the tag browser and select manage tags. It is a lot easier to rename tags from this view.
