I had a feeling All Quiet on the Western Front might be a popular choice. Such a famous novel. It was studied in my high school but I missed out on the experience. Would be good to get a chance to read it now.

It sounds from the spoiler that it's auto-biograpical in nature more than just a novel, but I guess he's not the only author who used experiences in WWI as a basis of a book. Hemingway also used his WWI experiences as basis of his writing if memory serves.

I think I'll abstain from voting and probably hold off reading this month's winner. I might use it in next year's reading challenge depending on what else I've found for that country.

Wow, The Count of Monte Cristo really made a surge. I'm a bit surprised so many people want to dive into a 1000+ pages as a book club read. Then again, we are talking about The Count of Monte Cristo. Some things exist to be an exception.
This one's on my "must read before I die" list, but I doubt I'd get around to it for this book club read. |

As I read The Count of Monte Christo and saw the films, I won't vote for it.
Erich Kästner is one of my favorite German writes, so I my vote for him; I read his Emil und die Detektive and was very impressed by Emil's cleverness. (edit: when I was very young. It is a children's book). And a vote for my own nomination The Dinner which is a good, but disturbing book. Also the Blind Owl, after I saw a quotation of this book: "There are certain sores in life that, like a canker, gnaw at the soul in solitude and diminish it". hm, The Count of Monte Christo has the most votes till now.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for the All quiet on the Western front (which I didn't vote for) or some other book to win..... I read Monte Christo about the same time, 4 or 5 times, that I read all Jules Verne (a very long time ago). And I saw three different films of it. Old news.......well....won't read this book again, really. ![]() |
