Beneath Ceaseless Skies!

The pulps, and the newsstands which sold them, are only memories. Today like-minded authors meet their audience via online magazines, with nary a tree pulped!

Spelunking the Kobo store for DRM-free gems has led me to a true diamond this time! The folks at Beneath Ceaseless Skies are producing Literary Adventure Fantasy of the first rank.

Their publications are not free, but (to me) seem well worth the low price. Single issues (seem to be two stories) are $0.99; anthologies $2.99 or $3.99. They ARE, however, DRM-free EPUB2s in the Kobo store!

If you want to get the flavor of their work, check their website:

http://www.beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/

Many stories can be read there for free. Also, many of the stories are rendered in audio. Subscriptions are available for purchase there, as well. And the art work...!

But for individual issues they will refer you back to your favorite eRetailer. There are currently 19 offerings at Kobo: five yearly anthologies, one steampunk themed anthology, and 13 recent issues.

A pair of links for example:

+ + + + +

The Best of Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Year One - Fourteen short stories of literary adventure fantasy from Beneath Ceaseless Skies online magazine. Features authors Marie Brennan, Richard Parks, and Campbell Award finalist Aliette de Bodard. Includes "Thieves of Silence" by Holly Phillips, named to Locus's 2009 Recommended Reading List, and "Father's Kill" by Christopher Green, winner of the 2009 Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Short Story. Edited by Scott H. Andrews, Editor-in-Chief of Beneath Ceaseless Skies Online Magazine.

Beneath Ceaseless Skies Issue #131, Fifth Anniversary Double-Issue - Issue #131 of Beneath Ceaseless Skies online magazine--our Fifth Anniversary Double-Issue--featuring stories by Richard Parks, Adam Callaway, Alberto Yáñez, Rebecca Gomez Farrell, and Naim Kabir, and cover art by Rick Sardhina.

I am very excited to have found this group of authors and artists!

It's probably worth mentioning that the Wildside Press 40% off over $10 with coupon sale in this thread here is for books that are DRM-free when bought directly via WSP, but not via other stores (they're couponable via Kobo, but DRMed there and Amazon, even for the public domain-derived megapacks). And they do have a small but decent selection of mid-tier backlist reprints of non-PD SF/Fantasy/Horror authors if you're an sfnal reader. They've also some cookbooks and vintage 60s-era LGBT literature (and one cookbook which also happens to be vintage 60s-era LGBT literature).

Anyway, x-linkage to the SF/Fantasy, Historical Fiction, General/Literary, and Romance megathreads:

Free (and DRM-free) via KDP Select @ Amazon:
  • Astrid: The Dragonslayer's Blacksmith by Resa Nelson, high fantasy mini-novel which ties into her Mundania Press-published novel series.
  • An Apple A Day Keeps the Dragon Away by Amber D. Sistla, a standalone fantasy short.
  • The Condor's Feather by Margaret Muir, 1880s Patagonia-exploring South American-expedition adventure with suspense and romance elements.
  • Frozen Music by Michael J. Vaughan, contemporary literary drama set in a classical musical group.
  • 2 novellas by Bonnie Dee, f/m contemporary high school reunion & Amish historical romances
  • Love, Honor, Obey? by Patricia Kay, a 2-in-1 omnibus of f/m contemporary wedding romances
  • Blaze of Glory by Mandy M. Roth, f/m contemporary paranormal werewolf western action adventure romance

Steampunk Cameos

One of the delights of a backward-looking genre is the potential to revisit familiar characters and favorite settings. Here are some EPUB2 DRM-Free forays into the clockwork world.

+ + + + +

Steampunk lives under the shadow of Jules Verne. In "The Volcano Lady: Volume 1 - A Fearful Storm Gathering" by T.E. MacArthur, the protagonist rubs shoulders with several prominent Verne characters.

"Volcanology is an unseemly occupation for a lady in 1882, but this will not prevent Dr. Letticia "Lettie" Gantry from pursuing her scientific obsession to America, Japan, or all the way to the Dutch East Indies if necessary. Not even the unwanted attentions of extraordinary "mad inventors" such as the legendary Captain Nemo and Robur the Conqueror will stop her. But too many men want to control her and, more importantly, her prediction equation: an exotic foreign agent, a man bent on destroying humanity, and a remarkable, enigmatic Civil War veteran whose moral certainty is running out of steam as fast as his captain's airship.

What is a lady to do?"

"Gears of a Mad God: A Steampunk Lovecraft Adventure," by Brent Nichols, melds two favorite genres. This one is both FREE and DRM-Free!

"Proper young ladies in the 1920s don't get dirty, and they certainly don't get into fights. But Colleen's favorite uncle has died under mysterious circumstances, and she wants answers. When a sinister cult comes after her, she pushes back - hard.

Soon she's running for her life, hunted by the cult of Katharis and aided by a secret government agency. It will take all of her courage, all of her strength, and every steam-powered weapon she can devise to keep her alive long enough to unravel the mystery of her uncle's death.

The cult thinks she knows her uncle's secrets. They'll do anything, hurt anyone, to make her talk. But they've made a grave mistake. Colleen is going to take the fight to them, again and again, until the people she cares about are safe - or have been avenged."

And would you believe steampunk Arabian Nights? Who could resist "Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn: A Steampunk Faerie Tale" by Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Day Al-Mohamed.

"In England, far from his desert home, Ali bin-Massoud serves as apprentice to the famed Charles Babbage. One night a mysterious box is delivered by a clockwork falcon and Ali's world is never the same again. Heartache, danger, and thieves mark his journey as Ali is summoned home at the death of his father.

It will take faith, knowledge, and yes, love to realize his destiny, and more than a little skill with steam-driven technology. Can he unravel the mystery of the puzzle box and the clockwork djinn before it is too late? An ancient legacy and Ali's very life depend on his success."

Outcasts and Gods (Wine of the Gods Book 1) by Pam Uphoff

*First book* of the Wine of the Gods

Wolfgang was a nice kid--until they decided he wasn't even human.
He was sixteen when the company laid claim to him.
He escaped, and stayed free for three years.
When he was arrested, identified and returned to the company, they trained him to be useful.
They didn't realize that they were training him to be dangerous

Genetic engineering.
First they cured the genetic diseases.
Then they selected for the best natural traits.
Then they made completely artificial genes.
As the test children reached puberty, abilities that had always been lost in the random background noise were suddenly obvious. Telepathy, telekinesis.
At first their creators sought to strengthen these traits. Then they began to fear them.
They called them gods, and made them slaves.

Dark Lady (Wine of the Gods Book 8) by Pam Uphoff

She saved a world, but not perfectly, not everyone. Drained of her magic, exhausted, she could not block out the screams of the injured and dying. She could only flee through a dimensional gate to an unknown world.

A town that accepted her. A town that needed all of her limping, injured, magic to save them when they came under attack.

Nautical Fiction from Thunderchild!

Ahoy there! If you love a salty yarn as much as I do, then direct your glass here, lads!

Author Victor Suthren has produced a series of four books (novella-length?) via Thunderchild Publishing. The Mainwaring Saga starts with "Royal Yankee"

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/royal-yankee

and continues through "The Golden Galleon," "Admiral of Fear," and "Captain Monsoon."

Although these books are not FREE, $2.99 seems a reasonable price. And since they're EPUB2 DRM-free, you can read them any way you like without resorting to PIRACY!!!!

(See what I did there, matey?)

P. S. Thunderchild is also bringing back some of the Winston Science Fiction young adult novels from the 50's. More on that tomorrow!

Winston Science Fiction!

Some of the highly acclaimed Winston Science Fiction novels are making their way into the ebook universe. You can read about the series here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Science_Fiction

Although these are what was termed "juvenile novels," they were rendered by reputable authors and capture the 50's spirit of scifi perfectly.

Besides being a lot of fun, these stories foreshadow many ideas that grew into prominent themes for movies and television. Take this one, for example:

Danger: Dinosaurs! by Evan Hunter

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/eb...nger-dinosaurs

"Owen Spencer would never have agreed to lead the time-slip expedition back to the Jurassic period — the Age of Reptiles — had he foreseen the terrifying experiences in store for the small group making the expedition. Chartering the expedition was Dirk Masterson, a treacherous big game hunter, whose alleged purpose was to take pictures of the enormous reptiles that roamed Jurassic times. Even when Masterson smashed the jeep into the force field, destroying the only protection that stood between the group and the lumbering beasts, Owen could not be sure it was an accident."

Now doesn't THAT sound familiar?

The Kobo store currently offers ten of the 37 original Winston titles. Thunderchild Publishing has made these available including the terrific original cover art!

Six are by Lester Del Rey:

* Mission to the Moon
* Step to the Stars
* Marooned on Mars
* Battle on Mercury
* Rockets to Nowhere
* Rockets Through Space (non-fiction)

Three from Evan Hunter (or Richard Marsten, or Ed McBain; same person!):

* Danger: Dinosaurs!
* Find the Feathered Serpent
* Rocket to Luna

And a single title from Paul Capon

* The World at Bay

These ebooks are selling for $2.99, but they do come as EPUB2 (DRM-Free) files.

I wonder if we will see the rest of these? Other famous authors in the series include Arthur C. Clarke, Jack Vance, Ben Bova, and Poul Anderson. I guess the copyright status would be difficult to untangle in some cases.

As a kid growing up in the sixties, it was always a treat to find a battered copy of a Winston SciFi buried in the public library stacks. Now we can read them on our very own tricorders. Isn't life ... fascinating?

Exiles and Gods (Wine of the Gods Book 2) by Pam Uphoff

*Second Book of the Wine of the Gods series*

Three Novellas in the Wine of the Gods Universe

High school student Chris Dunmeyer though he was smart, athletic and good looking. The tests that showed that he was genetically engineered came as a shock. Bad enough he wasn't allowed to compete in sports, was shunned as a techno monster. But now the majority wants "his kind" gone. And with the new parallel world technology, it looks like there's a place to send them.
Exiled from Earth, the genetically engineered colonists and the escaped "gods" find their parallel Earth a challenge, a paradise, and an opportunity to explore the abilities their genetic engineering has blessed, or cursed, them with.

Includes two shorter works in the same world.

Men worship the Phoenix and Dragon gods. Some are fortunate enough to touch their essences, transforming ordinary women into fearsome warriors and men into miraculous healers.

The beginnings of the next scourge brushes the town of Breden, where Walter, son of elixir bean farmers, itches for adventure only to discover the harsh brutality of combat.

Ren of Atikala, Kobolds, #1 by David Adams

I am Ren of Atikala. Kobold. Sorceress. Warrior. I have many stories to tell and this one is about my home.

Home. The word has a special resonance with us all. Great or humble, rich or poor, everyone cherishes their home, and if deprived of it, loses a piece of themselves. I once thought that life could not be so cruel as to take everything I’d known in an instant.

Oh how I now understand that life can be capricious indeed. This is the story of how I came to the surface of Drathari and unwillingly traded a life for a life.
