German Wikipedia (2005) on DR1000!

Hi

This threat encouraged me to try the 2005 wikipedia mobi version on the DR1000 - it runs very nice and fast.

2005 was the last mobi version of wikipedia in one file - so this works on the DR1000.

Just download this file and copy it into the dictionary (Wörterbuch) folder - here you go!

with this tool?

I cannot find it anywhere to try it...

Yes, I do! It works, but the file extension must be "mpb" instead of "prc".

I tried this on my dr1000 and failed in making it work. Could you explain further your method.

I downloaded und unpacked the archive of the wikipedia provided by the MobiPedia project. Since the files in the archive have the extension prc and the firmware of the Digital Reader only accepts mbp, you have to rename them. Afterwards I copied all the files (now *.mpb) into the directory inteded for dictionaries on the device. I guess I had to reboot the device to make it work. That's all.

I am not sure why you think the extension should be 'mpb' instead of 'prc'. I have no experience with the Wikipedia files on my DR, but my mobipocket e-books have an extension of 'prc' on my DR and they are recognised as proper mobipocket files by the DR. The DR does itself create 1k files with a 'mbp' extension (NOT 'mpb') for 'prc' files I have opened, but the prc files are still recognised. (You can even delete the 'mbp' files.)

Well, I wasn't able to look up in the Wikipedia until I renamed the files, so I concluded the file extension might have caused the problem.

The spanish version of wikipedia doesn't work:

Problems:
- Unicode character encoding (utf-8). The reader can display some of the pages, whenever the title doesn't have unicode characters. The reader halts if there's certain symbols.

- There's a problem with the index search, too. If you go to the index link in the main page, you will browsing a blank page. (I guess it has to do with the unicode).

- Dictionary. The files doesn't have markup to be a dictionary. So you can only open random pages.

This is strange since the German umlauts are displayed and looking up works fine.

I tried it also with the german file. Doesnt work! The extension is ".mpb" right?

DR1000 shows a Fragezeichen as fileicon...

Gogolo, I have a commentary about the extension file: The spanish wikipedia has 18 files named wpes0.prc to wpes18.prc. So the extensión isn't .mbp. (A quick scan of the mobipocket files shows that all my books has the prc extension, too).

As additional note: I have tried with FBReader too, but the result was is the same (doesn't work).

Thats sort of a mystery. Pagnol, could you explain further? Renaming to .mpb isnt working for us. Which firmware do you have? Did you install additional software? Thanks.

Currently I am using version 1.7.1 of the firmware but the Wikipedia was perfectly usable with 1.7.0, too. I haven't got a clue what you are doing wrong. I just copied the content of the archive into the system/dictionaries on the device, rebooted the deviced and that's all.

Thats puzzling. Can somebody else download the wikipedia and try? There is also the english version! No one out there who likes to have a 2008 wikipedia on his DR1000? Here:
