But I do plan to make other updates to the dictionary. So now that you've mentioned it, I'll try to make sure to update JMDict as well whenever I make other updates, because it certainly doesn't hurt. Incidentally, do you have any requests for things that would make the dictionary even more useful to you? Quote:
Part of why I even started this project was that although I found some resources for Kobo J-E dictionaries, they were only ever tools... which never seemed to work. And people never posted the dictionaries themselves for download (I suspect for copyright reasons, because unlike mine I think they used non-freely-licensed source material). It was very frustrating. My goal is for this dictionary to always be super easy (and legal) for anyone to download and use. |

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread to some, but after a lot of searching I can't seem to find a definitive idea of what to expect...
I have a Kobo on the way to replace a deceased Sony. I read books in Spanish on it, selecting ES - EN as the default dictionary for the device, which worked very well. I have a Kindle, which recognizes a Spanish book, giving English definitions upon tapping. How does Kobo handle that? Must I select English as a "destination" translation for each word individually selected? Also, does it make a difference whether the book has been sideloaded? Many thanks! |

Swedish-English dictionaries
Hi,
Unfortunately the Swedish English or English Swedish dictionaries seems to have the wrong file or link to it as it shows as German dictionaries. Could you please or anyone help me out with these ones. Many thanks in advance! Quote:

Dictionary with Chinese as source language?
Hi, I've been trying to create a custom Chinese dictionary with Penelope:
I made a csv with two entries and ran the following command: penelope -i test.csv -j csv -f zh -t zh -p kobo -o dicthtml-zh --group-by-prefix-length 1 I put the outputted ZIP in .kobo/custom-dict and it shows up on my Kobo, but if I highlight a word for which I made an entry in the CSV, and switch to the custom dictionary, my Kobo says that there is no entry found in the dictionary. Here is a Google drive link with my csv and the outputted zip: https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...t4?usp=sharing Would anybody be able to figure out the cause of the problem? |

I'm not sure if you were aware, but starting in June 2021, they started to incorporate example sentences taken from the Tanaka Corpus into JMdict. I'm not sure if they're tagged differently or if they're already included in the definitions, but if they're not, would you consider adding them in (or generating a new version since the one posted is from April)? I know adding more data might add more noise to something intended as a minimal reading dictionary, but for someone like me who's still trying to learn the language, it's nice to stumble upon things like other uses or other contexts when encountering new words or terms. It's weird that it's not linked to in the main project page, but the version with example sentences can be found on their wiki here: https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php...ionary_Project And pie-in-the-sky feature request: Merging in the JMnedict entries as well (I can't tell if they were reincorporated back into JMdict proper after the split). In practice, I'm not sure how useful they would be for a reading-oriented dictionary, though. When reading, you already have an example sentence right there in the book. And I would worry both about it bloating the size of the dictionary file and making it harder to browse the definitions by making the entries longer. But I'll keep it in mind anyway. It's probably something I could add as an option in the tool, so people can build their own custom dictionaries with the example sentences included if they like. Quote:

untested P.S. do not forget to replace the font for the dictionary (there is a lot in the topic how to do this, I will not repeat myself), otherwise it will not display. Last edited by Semwize; 09-27-2021 at 02:03 PM. |
