Long 'Formatting...' time
Just got my PRS-505. LOVE it.
Main complaint? Large .lrf files hang at 'Formatting...' forever! The little animation stops, too. The first time this happened it eventually sorted itself, and bam - there was my book. Finally. I've been sitting here ten minutes. Not sure how long I'm supposed to be waiting as I don't know how many pages are supposed to be in this book. For what it's worth, I downloaded .lrf files. No conversion. So um. How do I interrupt the reader to cancel? Can I do that? |

Hi Magnum,
Are you transferring your lrf via sony software or direclty by drag'n'drop? In the first case, Sony's software is supposed to preformat the file which thus should open quite quickly on your prs. |

Magnum--
Did you use the Sony Connect software to transfer the files to your reader? The Sony Connect software "pre-paginates" LRF files so they shouldn't take to long to load once their on your Sony. One of the only reasons I use the Connect software... Hope you enjoy your reader! dordale |

I use Calibre with my Reader. In the beginning I experienced very long pre-pagination times, too. Once it took 30 min (it was a very long book, but still).
Now I don't remember exactly - but I think that after I ran the costumizer hack the second time, it helped. At least it got better after I'd had the reader for some weeks. Sorry I can't give you a better description, but I'm simply not what helped me, but I did have the same issue. Now I don't expect it to take more than 4-5 min. max. |

For big books, it'd probably be worth exporting them from Calibre to disk, then using the Sony eBook Library to load them & thus have it to pre-paginate them. I don't bother myself, but I suspect that I read shorter books, as I don't recall having to wait anything like that sort of duration.
Another option might be to convert them to ePub rather than LRF, if that's feasible, as that doesn't have the same startup issues, although that brings it's own set of compromises... |

I've set the basic font size to my preferred fint size. That way I only need to wait once.

I've been using eBook Library to transfer ePub and LRF to my 505 and I don't have to wait to open my LRF format eBooks. eBook Library sorts out the pagination for the 505 so the 505 does not have to do it. It also saves battery as well as paginating takes battery when it has to do so.

I've been using Calibre for everything. Maybe I'll try using the Sony tool. A big shame Calibre doesn't take care of this.

Switch to using EPUB instead and you wont have to wait.

Using the Sony software after converting in Calibre did the trick. kovidgoyal, Calibre is *awesome* and I love it - as the developer, do you have any insight as to why Calibre doesn't index the same way as the Sony software? I'd like to have Calibre be my one-stop book management solution.
I'm fairly new to this, so I'll see about EPUB format as well. Thanks for the tips everyone! |

Because in order to implement this feature, I would have to *exactly* reverse engineer the layout algorithm SONY uses for LRF files. That task would take more time than all the rest of the calibre development combined
