Alternatively, it's now also detailed in the Battery field of the NTX HWConfig block (which used to just point to the battery capacity).

Code:

The fact that it's a standard battery type that has replacements available is good, but it doesn't answer the question of whether you can a) open the Kobo and b) swap the batteries without totally destroying the device in the process.

The second worked perfectly. Gill Sans is back. I learned a lot today. Thank you so much!
I'd be disappointed to lose Malabar and Caecilia. Never used Gill Sans. Will have to see about sideloading them if I decide to get a Clara 2E.

You might find that there is a difference between fonts you find online and the ones Kobo furnishes on its readers. That is what I found when I sideloaded Gill Sans. It was almost the same, but with much different weight and maybe slightly different spacing. This led to fiddling with Kobo's weight settings for the first time since find a pleasing universal setting long ago. I got it close to the look of the stock font, but not quite.

That's why I followed the procedure to patch the original font to the reader.

YMMV with the other two fonts.

Mainly, I think updating the charger to USB-C and the next generation screen were what caused Kobo to put out the refreshed Clara. They llikely don't want to be where the Oasis finds itself right now.
Changing over to using recycled plastics seems to me like a good change (or at least a good start) and is thus one up on things like Kindles.

Oh yeah. (Assuming it is effective in reducing/removing excess plastic from the world,) I'd love all readers (all devices) to move that way. Honestly, I suspect it is greenwashing on Kobo's part, but I can hope to be wrong.

Now it goes for about 2.5 weeks until it reaches about 40% and then depletes overnight -- or sometimes in minutes.

I bought a second HD at about the same time to fiddle with. I figured I would keep it stored most of the time at 75% charge, and after a couple of years put it into full time use as "almost new". This strategy worked well with the old Sony T-3. But not with the Kobo. The much less-used battery of the stored device acts exactly the same as the much-used one.

As an aside, before I knew the 2E would exist, I recently bought a third HD on sale. (Yes I really love these small readers!) I think Rakuten was selling very old stock, because the battery displayed the same poor behavior as my two old ones! So I returned it, which was good because then the 2E was announced.

The HDs are still useful. I will probably give one to a friend who is still using one of my old T-3s.
May I ask how many hours of reading did you do in six weeks? I am curious since my recently purchased Clara HD does not last nearly that long. I get maybe a week or so out of mine. I do read a lot though, I have seen 30 or so hours of reading on a charge, so I feel it is fine.

I came from the original H2O after breaking the screen. It seemed to do better on battery life. I do think the Clara is doing better than at first though. I am not really monitoring battery life anymore.

I average about 1.5 hours of reading per day. The question I would ask about your new Clara HD is: Does your battery behave normally until reaching about 10%, or does it rapidly deplete after about 35%?

Rapid depletion suggests improper battery calibration. Your reader thinks that it has 35% left based on when the battery was new, but now 35% is actually 10%. My Libra does not exhibit this problem. I've been trying to calibrate it by discharging below 10% and charging to 100% a few times. The meter seems more stable now than when I first got it, so I'll switch to using 20 - 90% charging thresholds.

This started after 30 months in service -- exactly the same on two Clara HDs. At first, the threshold was about 30%. Now it's more like 40%. Anyway, those are now secondary, as I have the new 2E.

I will have to keep an eye on it. I believe it has been acting normally, although on its first charge, it seemed to shut down at around 35%, but it had also been put in a tank bag on a motorcycle during a long trip. I thought it had somewhere around 35% when I left, but when I tried to turn it on once I arrived, it would not turn on. It was dead. What I thought may have happened was the sleep function got messed up due to the magnets on the base of the bag. Then again my old H2O was carried in it with no issues.

I will keep a better eye on it and will post an update when I figure out how it is actually doing. I will admit I have simply been using it instead of worrying about it lately. I do love the Clara. I am happy to have a smaller reader again.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

Very useful to know. I think I might sell my Clara HD and buy this. Note-taking on the HD is really poor because of the bad performance. I know this device is slow as well but it'll save me alot of headaches, as I use it on a regular basis.

On the other hand I can get an Onyx Boox for Android support (can play Interactive Fiction easily) and the A4 & X modes to change screen refresh rate. Lower battery life though. Hard to decide

I got my new Clara 2E today (upgrading from a Glo HD) and I'm liking it a lot, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make audiobooks not show up in my book listing. I listen to those via my phone and will never want to listen to them via the eReader. I know I can filter by eBooks, but I don't want them to show up even in the Unread filter. This obviously wasn't a concern with the Glo HD given that device can't do audiobooks. I don't see an obvious way, but thought I'd check.

When you tap the three dots next to an e-book, you have the option to remove it from the device to save space. Could you remove all the audiobooks that way?

Nope, I didn't download them at all, they're still listed there as a downloadable option. The only option in the menu is to archive them, but I don't want to do that as I still want them visible on the phone app to play them there.
