The "Dune" books are not legally available as e-Books.

So far as I know, only Dune Messiah is available as an ebook from the original series by Frank Herbert. It was expensive on anything except the Kindle when I checked a few months ago.

Not entirely true.
The various sequels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin anderson are availbale as ebooks. Only Dune Messiah from the original set has a legitimate ebook edition. Fictionwise has those mentioned. ______ Dennis |

Thank you for the correction. I knew that the later Herbert & Anderson books were available as eBooks, but I didn't know that "Messiah" was. They are all available as audio books.

Dugbug's Kindle Store Science Fiction & Fantasy Scorecard just added Dune. The Kindle also has Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune. All at $7.99.

this pricing disparity is getting pretty ridiculous:
$7.99 for Kindle version at Amazon $11.20 at the Sony Store $25.95 at FictionWise where strangely they don't have book1, but do have 2-4. Same deal at eReader.com of course since FictionWise owns them $16.00 at Mobipocket.com which is pretty weird since Amazon owns them...obviously Amazon doesn't want Mobipocket taking any Kindle business away from them. I applaud Sony on their 2nd to the lowest price. And Sony shows $16.00 as the "list price"...if this is true this means amazon sells it for LIST on Mobipocket.com, and HOW BIG of a LOSS do they take on selling the Kindle format? |

The problem here is what we've been saying for a long time. eBooks will tank if the prices are not fixed. We are not going to pay more for the eBook then the pBook.

Retailers buy from the publisher (if they are a huge chain like B&N or Borders) or from a distributor if they are smaller. They buy at a wholesale price, which is probably 40 - 60 percent of what the list price is. Retailers who discount books are sacrificing margin on the titles, hoping to make up the difference in volume and in additional purchases you make while you are there. Sometimes discounting is taken to extreme called a "loss leader", where the retailer does take a loss on the item. The idea is to get the customer into the store, where they can be sold other things. I don't know what sort of discount Amazon gets on ebooks sold through the Kindle store, but you can assume it's substantial, and Amazon isn't losing money on sales. Also, posters have previous recounted tiered pricing at Amazon, with a popular title appearing originally at a higher price, and gradually dropping to the $9.99 standard. Amazon is taking advantage of the fact that some folks will want the book now, and will pay more, rather than wait for the price to drop. Because the commerce is entirely electronic, they can get real time sales figures and time their price drops. ______ Dennis |

What do you mean??
The books that are available for the Kindle are the ones by Frank Herbert. There were four of them: Dune Children of Dune Dune Messiah and God Emperor of Dune. When you say "last two" .... do you mean books by someone other than Frank Herbert?? |

Frank Herbert wrote 6 Dune novels, the last two are Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune. See Dune (novel) from Wikipedia.
