Hi,

With some very old firmwares we were able to disable the screen refresh ; when this setting was ok we could see "Oh the humanity" (in Settings --> Reading Settings --> Page Refresh).

Now, with 3.17.3 (and all firmwares before), I can see again this value "Oh the humanity" but the screen is refreshed every 6 pages...

Have you got the same performance ?

You can patch the firmware to increase the page turn before flash. I have mine set to 12.

I am not so sure whether it was ever possible to disable screen refreshing completely via the configuration file.

I can still set the screen refresh rate in the configuration file, and it has the wished effect. For instance,

Code:
[Reading]
numPartialUpdatePageTurns=20

Thanks for yours replies guys, I will try.

I've got 3 other questions :

1. I'm going to buy the H20 model that seems to have no light button... so how will I power on the light if I can see the screen without turn on the light of my bedroom ?????

2. If I put the kobo to sleep mode (with light on), will I find the light on on the next restart?

3. Is there really a big difference between the screen of a Glo not HD and an H20 (about quality)? if there is really a big difference, does it appear too in nightmode?

4. On my Glo I've added a resistor to reduce the light when I read in the night (by default at 0% it was really to bright for me). What about the H20?

Sorry again for my very bad english.

You swipe up on the left side of the screen next to the bezel to turn on/increase the light. You swipe the same left side down to lower/turn off the light.

When you put the H2O to sleep with the light on,the light will come back on when you wake it up.

The biggest difference is the size. The H2O is 6.8" and the Glo HD is 6".

As for #3, the proper answer (my mistake for the incorrect answer) is that the Glo uses an 800x600 Pearl eInk screen. The H2O uses a Carta 6.8" screen with a resolution of 1430×1080. The screen on the H2O is much higher resolution and has a much better contrast. Also the Carta screen does not ghost as much as the Pearl screen.

#4, at 0% the H2O's light is off. When I read in total darkness, I use 4%.

Slight correction ... the Glo (non-HD) screen is better than that. It uses a Pearl 758x1024 eInk screen.

Even so, the H2O Carta screen is still noticably better, IMO.

Sorry again for my very bad english.
The Glo at its lowest light level is MUCH brighter than the H2O at its lowest light level. My eyes are very light sensitive and reading in near pitch blackness I actually need to put the brightness up from 1% on the H2O, to maybe 2-4% or so. To me this finer control of low light levels is one of the biggest advantages of the newer devices (along with higher resolution/better contrast of course).

Also note that the swiping to increase/decrease the light only works while reading; if you are on the home screen, library, ... swiping for the light doesn't work.

What! Why has nobody told me this before?

When you're my age Sport can best be done in front of the TV with a good book in hand for any dull passages. In fact, that's exactly how I spent this afternoon - no dull bits - so not much reading.

I have a 650 that I got after my 505's screen controller crapped out. The battery in my 650 started to be noticeably weak and not hold a chanrge for as long as it should. I inherited a T1 and that works well. I bought the nook STR for about $20 as Radio Shack was having a closeout on them. The H2O I bought because I wanted the larger screen, the better contrast, the front light, and newer version of RMDSK (ADE) with the typesetting. So I haven't really been collecting Readers.

I'm not much into sports, I do go to the cinema and I have a wife. Reading fits in just fine with all that.
