I've never mentioned it on here before, but I've been the full-time caregiver for my grandmother for the past 8 years since my mother died (my grandmother was 82 when I started.) At first that consisted mostly of just being there in case something happened since she was still active and mobile around the house, but over that period I took on more and more of her old "jobs" as she became older, had two hip breaks (5 years apart), lost most vision in both eyes, until the last couple of months she lacked the strength to even sit on or stand from her bedside toilet on her own. On Christmas Eve her condition took a sudden negative turn, she was placed a hospice on Wednesday, and she died tonight (Friday) just after 11 PM (I was kind of rooting for her to reach 2011, even though I knew it wouldn't be long.) So I now face the perspective of finding a job in this economy after 8 years out of work.
As a caregiver myself, I'm so sorry, ardeegee. Deaths during the holidays are particularly difficult, too. I hope that 2011 will be better for you.

You just need a couple of days of doing nothing but reading and sipping warm drinks. It's been a busy holiday season. Take a time-out!

You've given her the best holiday (and life) gift possible - loving care 24 x 7 - and more. She (and you) are truly blessed.

Best of luck in finding a job.

Bah, two weeks ago I had a throat infection, luckily it cleared up pretty fast. However, since Thursday I have this annoying ticklish cough. Everything that usually helps, pills, cough syrup, water, licorice, doesn't work. The only thing that help a little bit is taking hot, steamy showers. I can breathe normally so it isn't a chest infection, I even tried hayfever tablets but that didn't work either.

Today friends came to visit but after a couple of hours with not just my mother smoking but also one of those friends and me trying not to cough too much or too loud my head felt like exploding and I fled upstairs.

My head and neck hurt and my ears are buzzing. Reading isn't an option because I can't concentrate. I think the best thing to do is go to bed and hope it gets better tomorrow .

Severe winter storms really messed up flight schedules. Thousands of people were stranded all over, especially those on the East Coast of the US where the storms did the most damage. Our flights were canceled and we couldn't get any bookings earlier than three days later. Mother Nature got us. No fault. No blame. We were fortunate in that we still had our hotel room and didn't have to camp out in the airport as thousands did all up and down the coast.

Three days after the airports re-opened there were still several hundred people standing in lines at Delta waiting to check in or get through security. Delays at the desks were up to 4-5 hours...

... So why the heck did Delta only have TWO (2) people manning the check-in desks? There were 12 stations available for check-in, but only two were operating. This is three days after a major disruption to flight schedules, Holiday travel season, airport delays the leading news story on all the channels, a time the airline knew that the number of people needing to be processed would be 2-3 times greater than normal, yet they did NOT increase the number of personnel to handle the rush. Why?

There is a wonderful new system of 'self check-in.' Just enter your confirmation code into the machine and it prints out your boarding passes. This system cuts out the need to stand in long lines and really speeds up the process. There were 10 such machines in the Delta departure area. None were working. Why?

We were fortunate in that our hotel had its own self-check-in machine so we were able to avoid the long lines and delays, but there were people in those lines who had arrived at the airport three hours early and still were missing their flights because of the long delays. And this was three days AFTER the airports supposedly resumed normal operations. And yet the costs of flying keep going up...

Ibuprofen works great for my head and neck aches and I finally found two things that help surpress the itchy coughs: 1. ice cream, had some scoop ice cream tonight and it worked, tomorrow I'm going to see if popsicles also work. 2. A type of salty licorice my dictionary hasn't got a translation for (salmiak drop).

I've also starting to get a runny nose and sneezing fits, the latter one is great fun when you're also in the middle of a coughing fit .

Off to bed now with a hot cup of tea and my reader, don't think I'll sleep much tonight.

Its so exhausting being sick... hope you feel better soon. But its like I tell my partner - if I'm sick enough not to do anything, it means i get a free pass to lie in bed for the day with a book.

Please accept my deepest condolences. Being the caregiver is exhausting. I hope you can afford to take a break and pamper yourself for a while before tackling the job market.
