Quote:
Tough, hard-boiled, and brilliantly suspenseful, The Last Good Kiss is an unforgettable detective story starring C. W. Sughrue, a Montana investigator who kills time by working at a topless bar. Hired to track down a derelict author, he ends up on the trail of a girl missing in Haight-Ashbury for a decade. The tense hunt becomes obsessive as Sughrue takes a haunting journey through the underbelly of America's sleaziest nightmares.

Last Seen Alive is the fifth in the Inspector Thanet series by Dorothy Simpson, and is a Silver Dagger winner. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Alive-In...dp/B072HM8Z9N/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Winner of the CWA Silver Dagger: A troubled woman returns to her peaceful English village after twenty years—and is murdered within twenty-four hours.

When Det. Inspector Luke Thanet was a young man, Alicia Parnell was one of the most popular girls in Sturrenden: beautiful, charming, and brilliant. But her perfect life was shattered when her teenage boyfriend killed himself. Alicia’s family left town soon after, and Thanet never expected to see her again. But two decades later, Alicia comes home to start her life over in the country village where she was born. No one knows what drew her back, and no one has a chance to ask—because less than a day after her return, Alicia is murdered.

Her body is found in the Black Swan hotel, and all signs point to strangulation. Inspector Thanet is shocked by the death of someone he knew, and to find Alicia’s killer, he’ll have to dig deep into their shared past. Someone in Sturrenden has a secret, and Thanet must uncover it before the killer strikes again.

The winner of the CWA Silver Dagger, Britain’s top prize for crime fiction, Last Seen Alive is a compelling puzzle from a “dependably pleasing” author (The Boston Globe).

If you bought Lord of the Wings on sale back in June, and now want to catch up on the first 18 books in the series , there is an omnibus of the first 18 titles (!!!!) on sale in the UK for £41.58. It's titled The Meg Langslow Series Thus Far: Books 1-18 of the Series, which works out to be just £2.31 per title IF you need them all. Sadly for me, I don't .

I have read several of the titles in this series, starting well back in DTB days, and found most of them to be as fun and funny as their titles imply. A couple of my favorites included Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon, and No Nest for the Wicket.

Anyway, here's the link if you're up for a lot of reading, and a list of all the titles is in the description: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Meg-Langslo...dp/B00URVJD6O/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Bestselling author Donna Andrews combines murder and madcap hilarity with a cast of eccentric oddballs in a small southern town. Here together for the first time in a fabulous eBook bundle are books 1-18 in the Meg Langslow series:

Murder with Peacocks
Murder with Puffins
Revenge of the Wrought Iron Flamingos
Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon
We'll Always Have Parrots
Owls Well That Ends Well
No Nest for the Wicket
The Penguin Who Knew Too Much
Cockatiels at Seven
Six Geese A-Slaying
Swan for the Money
Stork Raving Mad
The Real Macaw
Some Like it Hawk
The Hen of the Baskervilles
Duck the Halls
The Good, the Bad and the Emus
The Nightingale Before Christmas

Death of a Dissident is the first in the Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov series by Stuart M. Kaminsky. It has dropped to $1.69 at Kindle US, an unusual price from Open Road, whose titles more commonly go on sale at $1.99, but WTH...

Not on sale at Kobo US, where Open Road is coupon/VIPable.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dissident-Ins...dp/B009H700QG/

Spoiler:
Quote:
On the eve of a show trial, a Soviet dissident is stabbed through the heart

On a frigid night in silent Moscow, Aleksander Granovsky paces the floor of his government flat. He has dedicated his life to exposing the brutality of the Russian penal system, and in two days he will be tried for the crime of smuggling essays to the West. Granovsky is drafting a speech to deliver in court when an assassin appears and pierces his heart with the point of a rusty sickle.

The case falls in the lap of Porfiry Rostnikov, a Moscow police inspector whose three decades on the force have made him an expert in navigating the labyrinths of the Soviet bureaucracy. But it will take every ounce of Rostnikov’s skill to find the killer and survive the investigation, as every question he asks takes him closer to the heart of the KGB.

X-link to the Non-Fiction thread for two titles of potential interest to mystery lovers:

@ £0.99 in the UK from Headline, Agatha Christie, a biography by Laura Thompson, drawing upon diaries, letters, and interviews with friends and family members, and Poirot and Me by David Suchet, a memoir of his role as Hercule Poirot in the long-running ITV adaptation series, written as the final episode was being filmed.

Also, some Nordic Noir bargains in the UK:

@ £0.99:
  • Roseanna, by Swedish authors Maj Sjöwall & Per Wahlöö (SYKM), 1st in their popular vintage Martin Beck series (Wikipedia), which is said to have inspired the modern wave of Scandicrime thrillers.
  • Two Soldiers by Swedish authors Anders Roslund & Börge Hellström (SYKM), 5th in their CWA Dagger Award-nominated DCI Ewert Grens series.

@ £1.99:
  • Cell 8 & Three Seconds by Anders Roslund & Börge Hellström, 3rd & 4th in the DCI Ewert Grens series
  • The Bat by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, 1st in his popular Harry Hole series starring a dysfunctional detective mostly in Oslo. This one is an early adventure taking him overseas to Australia, which netted both the prestigious Glass Key Award and Riverton Prize but IMHO is the weakest of the series. YMMV, and it's been an MR Book Club selection before.
  • The Ice Beneath Her by Swedish author Camilla Grebe (SYKM; co-author of the Siri Bergmann series with Åsa Träff), a standalone psychological thriller. This one is couponable/VIP-discount eligible.

And one for Canada & the US @ $1.99:

Trophy by Danish author Steffen Jacobsen (SYKM), 1st in his Sander & Jensen series pairing up an ex-soldier turned PI and a Detective Inspector in Copenhagen. This is couponable/VIP-eligible from Skyhorse/Arcade Publishing. Some Quercus or Headline imprint seems to hold the rights to the others/in the UK, which have previously been deep-discounted.

Thanks for Trophy. I am finding a lot of the Scandinavian titles at my libraries, so there's a little less teeth-grinding about all the good stuff in the UK for 99p.

In these three charming chillers the duo answer the call of helpless heroines with nothing to lose-except their lives. First a beautiful young Aphrodite comes to Nero looking for a hero-and the answer to the mystery of her father's death....Then an old flame of Archie's reignites with a plan that may corner him into a lifetime commitment-behind bars....And finally a detective's work is never done, as a hot tip leads the team into the sizzling center of a sexy scandal that could leave them cold-dead cold.

Lord John and the Private Matter is the first in the short 4-book Lord John series by Diana Gabaldon. This series features Lord John, who is a carry-over character from her (much) better known Outlander series. Matter has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Lord-John-Pri...dp/B000FBJARS/

Spoiler:
Quote:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey.

The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.

Praise for Lord John and the Private Matter

“[A] thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully witty historical mystery set in the richly detailed, occasionally bawdy world of Georgian England.”—Booklist

“Packed with vivid description and detail. Gabaldon aptly transports readers to eighteenth-century London, with all its reeking humanity and glitteringly elegant excess.”—BookPage

Wreck the Halls is the fifth (and holiday-themed, as you might guess from the title) in the Home Repair is Homicide series by Sarah Graves. It was briefly $0.99 last year in December, and now it looks as if its $0.99 sale (like everything else about the holiday season) has been moved up to November .
