Surprisingly, this has now also dropped to $1.99 in Canada (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt hasn't been matching deals for a long time outside of special sale events; couponable/VIP-eligible at Kobo in Canada but not US), but seems to have gone back up in the US:

Also, if you happen to read French or want to practice it, a fair-sized selection of Eco's non-fiction essays/collections in translation from the original Italian is on sale from Hachette (normally much more expensive; I haven't noticed these dropping in years), for what seems will be the entire month if Amazon' francophone deals listing is correct. Linkage goes to Kobo CA in case anyone feels like traveling:

@ $3.99: Reconnaître le fascisme, Comment voyager avec un saumon (corresponds to How to Travel with a Salmon collection previously on sale), Cinq questions de morale

@ $5.99: A reculons comme une écrevisse

@ $6.99: Kant et l'ornithorynque (corresponds to the anglophone collection on sale above)

Speaking of French practice, Crown/Archetype's Three Rivers Press imprint (a division of Macmillian, IIRC) has discounted to $1.99 in Canada & the US (should be the same price at all the regular retailers):

French Made Simple: Learn to speak and understand French quickly and easily by Pamela Rose Haze in their “Made Simple” teach yourself-type series of DIY learning books, which are quite good for the ones I've tried. IIRC their language learning ones have handy side-by-side English and target language reading and practice sections, though I don't know how well that would translate to ebook formatting.

U.S. History by Todd Pfannestiel and OpenStax

U.S. History is designed to meet the scope and sequence requirements of most introductory courses. The text provides a balanced approach to U.S. history, considering the people, events, and ideas that have shaped the United States from both the top down (politics, economics, diplomacy) and bottom up (eyewitness accounts, lived experience).

U.S. History covers key forces that form the American experience, with particular attention to issues of race, class, and gender.

Sell Out: Aldrich Ames: The Spy Who Broke the CIA by James Adams

Aldrich Ames was a downwardly mobile CIA officer with a serious inferiority complex, and an even more serious drink problem.

To the KGB, he was the most important recruit since Kim Philby.

And Ames was special. His betrayal would make him a multimillionaire, cause the death of at least ten of America’s best agents, and single-handedly destroy a superpower’s Cold War intelligence operation…
On 21 February 1994, Aldrich Ames and his wife Rosario were finally arrested outside their home by the FBI.
It was the end of the biggest spy hunt in American history — and the beginning of the biggest scandal ever to hit the CIA.

But why was Ames not caught sooner?

James Adams is also the author of The New Spies, The Financing of Terror, Trading in Death and Secret Armies all published by Endeavour Press.

Bargain @ $1.99 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Mariner Book imprint in the US only for now (should be the same price at all the usual stores):

Travels in Hyperreality by the late Italian literary novelist and semiotician Umberto Eco (Wikipedia), another essay collection on a wide variety of topics, translated from the Italian by the late William Weaver (Wikipedia).

Collected here are some of Umberto Eco’s finest popular essays, recording the incisive and surprisingly entertaining observations of his restless intellectual mind. As the author puts it in the preface to the second edition: “In these pages, I try to interpret and to help others interpret some ‘signs.’ These signs are not only words, or images; they can also be forms of social behavior, political acts, artificial landscapes.”

From Disneyland to holography and wax museums, Eco explores America’s obsession with artificial reality, suggesting that the craft of forgery has in certain cases exceeded reality itself. He examines Western culture’s enduring fascination with the middle ages, proposing that our most pressing modern concerns began in that time. He delves into an array of topics, from sports to media to what he calls the crisis of reason.

Throughout these travels—both physical and mental—Eco displays the same wit, learning, and lively intelligence that delighted readers of *The Name of the Rose* and *Foucault’s Pendulum*.

X-link to the DRM-free thread for some new bundles:

Humble Book Bundle Start a Startup by Wiley contains DIY business books from the publisher of the popular “Dummies” series, with some titles especially suited towards tech startups, but most of general applicability to other ventures as well.

Also, StoryBundle's The Aurora Award Bundle 3 contains only one non-fiction title, fellow MR member author Robert J. Sawyer's Relativity, which collects a number of his essays and his old writing advice column from OnSpec magazine (also available on his website, IIRC) in a handy single volume and is a nice offering if you're also otherwise interested in the rest of the bundle.
