Actually, my Mini _does_ have ghosting with 3.16... but only for pop up menus, reading is not affected.

Installed it on my H2O, everything seems fine, new dictionaries for Japanese.

It rebooted when I used 'sync'. So sickel is still alive and kicking I guess.

What changes with this new version 3.17.0 ?

Changes I've noted :
- ghosting is still there when we open menus (in the frameworks) but less important than with 3.16.0.
- with 3.16.0 the come back on books after closing the menus was long (the windows was refreshed many times in black and white) that really better with 3.17.0.

If they wanted to pull a firmware they'd probably have to offer the old one at a higher version so the device will actually update? It's not like your device downgrades on sync if you install the newer firmware from here.

No model of Kobo needs a factory reset to upgrade the firmware. And no resent version of the firmware needed a specific version on it to do an upgrade.* If you want to manually install the new firmware, do it. Otherwise, it will get sent to you device sometime in the future.

* As far as I remember, there has only been one time where Kobo needed an uprade to a particular firmware before upgrading to the next. And that was for a subset of the original version of the Touch when going from 2.0.0 to whatever was the next generally released version.

A little bit of feedback from my horrorful experience of using Aura. From all pitiful firmwares of Kobo, all that horrible pinch and zoom freezing screen of the reader with "pinch turned off"q I finally found decision. I rollback to FW 12.1 and things got better from a a long time, without freezing circle on the screen. Never think to upgrade again. I prefer to smash this device to the wall, rather than dwelling with crippled software of it.
Never buy Kobo device again and never suggest my friends to do so.

I manually updated my Glo from 3.16.0 to 3.17.0 without doing a factory reset, and there was no problem with the update.

Edit: The first wi-fi sync after updating was a bit unusual, it had a message "Preparing device for sy..." with the last word cut off (I was worried it might be doing a system reset), it took a few minutes and appeared to be frozen as the spinner had stopped spinning, but it did complete normally in the end, and subsequent syncs have been fast as usual.

What does "affiliate=BestBuyCa" mean exactly ? is it simply a way to download and install the last firmware when we do a sync instead of doing it manually with the KoboRoot.tgz ?

Every seller uses a affiliate (found in the affiliate config file) to send the updates to your device but not every affiliate sends it updates right away, some wait a very long time.
When set to BestBuyCa it almost update instantly. (when synchronising the device)

FW 3.17.0 is really a good version on my Glo : stable, no ghosting, and faster on changing pages, etc.

The only thing that could be improved is a screen refresh on the framework opened (rectangles) when we use the dictionnary, because we can see a little ghosting on it but it does not really matter (I don't know if a refresh can be done on just a part of the screen and not on the entire).
