The Kindle ereaders will not read epub, you will be able to use send to Kindle to send an epub that will be converted to the appropriate Kindle format for your Kindle ereader. Much like KDP where epub has been a recommended input format for quite a while now.

As for reading Kindle books on a Kobo. Easy enough to do though you might want to read some of the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre sticky thread in the calibre forum.

They all kinda look the same to me, except the font looks like it's set larger in the last image.

I'd guess the epub has an embedded base font size and/or line height in the css. Those must be removed.

If that's the case, you could try this in the conversion options:

Look & Feel -> Styling -> Select what style information you want completely removed -> Fonts, Margins, Padding

Or instead of removing all three, try them 1 at a time and check the output.

Or try Fonts -> Disable font size rescaling

I dunno... try various options 1 at a time until you land on one that makes a difference?

Those options won't do it. Font-size and line-height might, but the trouble with automated removing is that it will remove everything - all specified font sizes, not only the base one.

The correct way to do it is to remove them manually in the editor.

The impression I get from the original complaint is that this is happening with EVERY epub they're converting, which leads me to believe there's possibly something goofy with their conversion settings.

What are they converting? They said these epubs are bought from another store. So they're not converting anything, as far as I know. They just send the epubs to their Kindle, but obviously something in the css makes the font and the line-height too large.

Edit: if I'm wrong and the books are actually converted, then what happens when they're sent as original epubs?

Well if they're not being converted to mobi first, my recommendation would be:

1. Convert them to MOBI in Calibre
2. Send the MOBI to Kindle via email
3. Or, convert MOBI back to epub

Thanks for the replies.

The third image above (epub purchased from another store) was just a straight epub emailed to my kindle.

I would prefer to stick with epub if possible now that you can email it direct to Kindle.

Are there any recommended settings or steps to get the best epub output in Calibre?

I will try exporting a new epub version of the third image above from Calibre later today.

Here’s the thing: Amazon’s conversion of EPUB via “send to kindle” is ass. If you want the book to look good on a Kindle when sending via email/app, then convert it to mobi first and then back to EPUB, which essentially strips out anything fancy that trips up Amazon’s lousy epub internal conversion process.

I think you might be right here.

My curiosity got the better of me so I took the epub that didn’t look correct, converted it to Mobi using the first online tool I could find, then converted it back to epub using the same service and then emailed the resulting epub to my kindle.

From an initial look the new epub looks the same as the books purchased from Amazon and the Star Trek epub from above.

I’ll do some more experimentation later but the first signs are very promising.
