It is still available. You simply have to find it through a search (I checked).

My current working theory is that the basic Kindle has the same "discontinued" status as the Kindle DX, which was "discontinued" at least twice and is available again:

As I wrote weeks ago, I don't see Amazon updating the basic Kindle, not unless they replace it with a model which is equally cheap if not cheaper.

The basic kindle doesn't really need any updating, its about as perfect in its simplicity as it can be. There is only one thing I wish it had, a sort in the archive for recent. It only has by author and by alphabet. During day time it is the best display on any of my kindles. And its light, just a good basic e-reader.
I love the thing.

I still am keeping my eyes open for a new PW though. For evening reading to replace my PW1.

New in the fora, and just ordered a paperwhite, so i think (=hope) there will not be a new kindle anytime soon! =D

P.S. In case a new one comes out lets say next month or in 6months, can i return mine back to mama-Amazon to get the newer?

I think Amazon has a 30-day for-any-reason returns policy.

So we now know that the new Kindle will launch on 14th October!

But i guess afterall if they indeed are going to release a new kindle out, its better coming before the 30day return period so i can still change it

If nothing is announced by September 30th, then you can probably fuhgettabaudit this year. They'll miss the holiday season.

I just checked. Amazon does not seem to be selling Basic Kindle or Kindle HD anymore? Chances are that they will have replacement models soon.

I found a Kindle Paperwhite page that said "this item is not yet available for purchase". Now I need to try and find it again to see if I was hallucinating and seeing what I want to see.

When I look on the Amazon (U.S.) website, I see that the basic kindle is only being sold by second hand dealers, but the paperwhites are listed as "in stock".

One can't help but wonder if amazon just has a cruel sense of humur with all of these "hints"

Probably the same one that was mentioned on KindleBoards a couple of weeks ago, that was linked to the original PW.
