The Silent Murder is an Elizabethan murder mystery by Peter Tonkin. It features Tom Musgrave as the protagonist.

It's part of the Kindle US countdown deals, and is at $0.99 right now, and for 2 days and about 16 hours more. (It's about 7:00 am, US Pacific time here right now.) It goes back up to $3.99 after that.

A couple of other books in this series have been free or sale-priced in the past, and I have The Point of Death and A Midwinter Murder on my TBR list, but haven't gotten to them yet, so can't comment on the series. The books seem to have pretty good, but pretty limited numbers, of reviews. I tend to like historical mysteries, so will probably pick this one up too, even though the blurb is a little bit florid.

Here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/Silent-Murder-...dp/B00L9KZ88E/

And here's the blurb:

Quote:
Peter Tonkin
London, 1595.

The Master of Defence Tom Musgrave rushes to the aid of a young messenger, the victim of a sudden, apparently unprovoked attack in the street outside his house.

In the dead boy’s possession Tom finds a bloodied letter intended for his eyes only.

And he manages to piece together a worrying message.

The missive contains a desperate cry for help from the beautiful Countess Cotehel, who is mute as a result of a terrible trauma.

Then a second body is found – belonging to another of the Countess’s servants.

When a horribly mutilated portrait of the Countess also turns up, Tom realises that she is in grave danger.

Tom and his apprentice rush to her aid, following her to the gloomy Castle of Cotehel in Cornwall, only to find that discovering who is threatening her, and why, is far more difficult than they’d supposed…

‘The Silent Murder’ is the thrilling fourth instalment of Peter Tonkin’s ‘Master of Defence’ series, featuring the Elizabethan sleuth and sword-master Tom Musgrave.

“Love, lust and Elizabethan politics enliven Tonkin’s briskly paced puzzle…” - Kirkus Reviews

“Everything a fan of historical mysteries could hope for” - Kirkus Reviews

“Riveting tale full of fast action” - Publishers Weekly

Peter Tonkin was born in Northern Ireland, and was raised in the UK, Holland, Germany, and the Persian Gulf. He has written thirty novels including ‘The Point of Death’ and ‘The Coffin Ship’.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

While on the subject of Amazon Countdown Deals:

Laguna Heat by T. Jefferson Parker is $0.99 for the next 3+ days.

Quote:
Laguna...
Where every day the sun makes a promise the nighttime breaks, while the super-rich live out expensive fantasies in posh beach houses and drown their memories in Cuervo Gold margaritas...

Laguna...
Where trouble has swept in like a Santa Ana wind, blowing the cover off a world of torture, murder and blood-red secrets

Laguna...
Where a crazed killer has turned paradise into a Disneyland of depraved violance--with a fiery vengeance--and where homicide cop Tom Shephard unravels a grisly mystery that reaches back across forty years of sordid sex, blackmail, and suicide into the dark corners of his own past, and sweats out a deadly truth in the sweltering..
Laguna Heat
I read this 20+ years ago and remember really liking it.

The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy $1.99

Quote:
Here is the runaway bestseller that launched Tom Clancy’s phenomenal career. A military thriller so gripping in its action and so convincing in its accuracy that the author was rumored to have been debriefed by the White House. Its theme: the greatest espionage coup in history. Its story: the chase for a top secret Russian missile sub. Lauded by the Washington Post as “breathlessly exciting,” The Hunt for Red October remains a masterpiece of military fiction by one of the world’s most popular authors, a man whose shockingly realistic scenarios continue to hold us in thrall.
