Actually the BBC programmes with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple pretty well resemble the books. It is the later ITV versions with Geraldine McEwan and Julia Mackenzie which changed some of the stories so they were pretty much unreconisable from the original books, and added Miss Marple to books which she was not in.

There were also 4 films with Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple, 2 of which were Poirot stories.

I have the complete DVD set of the Joan Hickson films; she will always be THE Miss Marple to me.

I too agree that Joan Hickson was THE definitive Miss Marple ...
and incidentally, she was Queen Elizabeth's favorite Miss Marple (apparently Elizabeth did NOT like Margaret Rutherford's version) - and Hickson was invited to a royal tea so that the Queen could express her appreciation for her performance! She received an OBE: 'Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the award and was delighted to do so, telling Joan that, as an ardent fan of Agatha Christie and Miss Marple, "You play the part just as one envisages it."'
