Not in Britain, and "Ten Little Niggers" was not regarded as an offensive title in Britain at the time. The US title of the book has always been "And Then There Were None", because the British title would have been offensive in the US. The British title was retained as late as the 1990s.

What about the non-Poirot and non-Marple books? What are the best of the bunch?

To add to Poohbear's list, there is also 'The Man in the Brown Suit' and also (as I said before) 'And Then There Was None'. This has been filmed several times under different names.

It takes place on an island with ONLY 10 people on it. There is a nursery rhyme (the contents have changed slightly to fit in with the books title changes), suggesting how 10 people will be killed. It's challenging. I enjoyed it.

Thanks, Poohbear and Eskimo.

It's been a very long time since I read any Agatha Christie, and I stayed almost exclusively with Poirot and Miss Marple. I don't think I read any of the suggested titles, other than And Then There Were None. I'll take a look at the others.

Hmm, I remember watching Murder is Easy, Ordeal by Innocence, Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and The Sittaford Mystery in the recent BBC Miss Marple series. Maybe @poohbear_nc didn't notice the non-Marple stipulation?

You think the fact that TV producers, having run out of Miss Marple novels, have started randomly putting her into any Agatha Christie novel that they can find, actually MAKES them Miss Marple books, do you?

Yes, she's been rather clumsily added to some non-Marple books.

Very. There was a recent TV adaptation of "The Pale Horse" (a "standalone" Christie book) which was made into a complete nonsense by having Miss Marple added. The person who was the protagonist in the book became merely a minor character in the TV version.

No problemo - I too was QUITE disappointed by the BBC's mangling of the non-Marple titles -- they are quite fine mysteries without a "name brand" sleuth added.

Out of the Christie I've read so far (mostly when young), And Then There Were None is definitely my favourite.

And speaking of Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, I recently watched the old television film version of it (without Miss Marple, thank goodness...lol). It was OK.

Not that I've been in any hurry to see old Christie films, but I also recently happened to see Endless Night. It was a bit of a mess and the solution seemed obvious to me, but it was interesting seeing such a different type of Christie mystery.

It was also published under the title '10 Little Indians' with the words in the nursery rhyme changed to indians, subsequently some versions have changed the words to soldier boys.

The original (British) title is still used in some other countries (usually in translation to their language.
