There won't ever be any Kindle versions at the libraries. Pottermore is the only place to be selling the eBooks and since Amazon has to have them to be served to the library, it won't ever happen.

I thought the announcement said that .mobi versions would be available.

Since the press release mentions them specifically as being available for Kindles (in the US) we'll just have to wait and see if there will ever be Kindle versions at libraries. I wonder if Amazon might allow OD to set up a Kindle DRM server (they already run regular Mobi DRM servers) which would also possibly solve Penguin's objections.

Selling and distributing/authenticating are two different things.
Pottermore can sell the ebooks and send the transaction to be fullfilled by Amazon. Hardly brain surgery. |

Why would Amazon allow someone else to use their servers for authentication, unless they're getting a cut of the price? (Why would a site not limited to Kindle-only mobi files want to use Amazon for authentication?) |

Indeed Amazon has already proven themselves to be NOT willing to do this, since that is not how they implemented library lending of books to Kindle.

Uh, that is *exactly* how they do the Kindle ebooks and the reason Penguin went ballistic. Overdrive does the selling/ordering, Amazon fulfills.

Authentication is verifying DRM so the reader app can open the book. So Pottermore can sell the books and pay Amazon to deliver the appropriate files (Mobi7, KF8, or whatever) and manage the DRM authentication. For library books, Overdrive sells the licenses to the customer (the library) and sub-contracts the delivery and authentication to Amazon. Same thing. (Whether Amazon gets any money from Overdrive or not is unknown but it is worth it to Amazon either way.) |
