Extract KoboRoot.tgz from any of the FW 16.0.0 packages and copy it into .kobo.
EDIT: It should have written "FW 3.16.0 packages".

Given that 3.16.0 can be installed on other devices such as the H2O, I hope the patches for all the devices are included.

The H2O uses Mark 5 firmware for which is not yet a link available, IMHO you must not apply other Mark firmware on a device then where it is made for.
It is pretty safe. The contents of the KoboRoot.tgz in each of the packages is identical other than a few images and some fonts. The real differences are in the "upgrade" directory. This contains the kernel and boot loader images. You shouldn't use the wrong one, but, the install code tries to make sure the wrong version isn't used. Only the upgrade directory in the N905/N905B package might be dangerous if used on the wrong device.

The only issue there might be is if there is a change in the kernel. There might be a bug fix or a change that some new function relies on. In that case, you might need to go back to the previous firmware. In any case, the worst that could happen is you would need to do a factory reset.

How can I see the botton that I showed with red arrow? Is it 3.16?
Left one I know, it comes with .kepub books.
Thanks.

That was used for "Beyond the Book". That was removed in 3.15.0. The button is now only used to show "Related books". It will only be displayed for a purchased kepub if it has some related books.

No. The Glo HD is Mark 6 hardware, the Glo is Mark 4. Use the link for the Mark 4 hardware to download the update for your Glo.

Hi my friends,

Does it mean that the link http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwa...ate-3.16.0.zip that appears on the first page of this post (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660) can be load on the Glo model ?

Indeed, at this hour it appears as "not released"....

An idea ?

Kobo have stated that this firmware is being released for the Touch and Glo HD only. But, it has been tested on all of them. The mark 4 package is safe to put on the Glo.

In the first post (which you referenced), I note whether the firmware was officially released for specific models.

As the current release wasn't released for the Glo, it remains 'not released'.

I write the first post considering an audience of non-technical people who do not completely understand the risks and ramifications of sideloading firmware. As such, I prefer to err on the conservative side of making sure that information that's not part of the official release is widely confirmed before adding it. In any case, this information will be in either this thread or the release discussion thread well before I add it on the first post.

I consider loading firmware on non-released devices a dangerous activity, at one point Kobo was threatening to ensure that this bricked your device. And it can still brick your device, which is why you wait for the few inevitable brave souls who will take the risk upon themselves and sideload the firmware onto non-released devices.

When I see enough posts that people have loaded the firmware onto non-released models, I'll update the first post to reflect this.

In this particular instance, while people have said they've loaded 3.16.0 onto the Glo, DNSB and davidfor are the first ones (that I've seen) that said which Mark's firmware to use.

Considering that I consider davidfor an authoritative source on the firmware, I'll update the first post to reflect his statement in the last post above this one. Which isn't to snub DNSB, who's statements on this I also rate highly.

You are, of course, welcome to do anything you want to do with your device. However, unless you specifically need something in the new release, or you're just a thrillseeker, hold off on sideloading the firmware onto non-released models until you are comfortable that it won't harm your device.

Another question regarding the use of the Mark 4 firmware on the Glo is whether or not the entire package is sideloaded, or just KoboRoot.tgz and not the update directory (which contains the kernel).

Do you sideload the whole package or just KoboRoot.tgz on the non-released models?

Edit: I think I answered my own question. On the Mark 4 models, you can use the whole package. Please let me know if I'm wrong about this.

The question now is which version would you use on the Mark 5 models, and do you sideload the whole package or just KoboRoot.tgz?

Yes, the Mark 4 package has everything in it needed for the Glo. I think all the Aura HD files are there, but I don't have one to check.

I did a check, and the KoboRoot.tgz from the Mark 4 package is probably the best to use. There are some files in the drivers directory for the hardware, and the Mark 4 are the same as the Mark 5.

I used the KoboRoot.tgz from the Mark 4 package to update my H2O. So far no problems noted.

It may also be worth noting that, to me, looking at the Mark 6 and Mark 4 KoboRoot.tgz files, the only significant difference is the files in the drivers directory. The other difference which causes the majority of the size difference are the pixie/kraken/trilogy slideshow images in the Mark 4 package.
