I don't use an official case I use this one but I only paid $13 for it. I use this case on all my tablets. They protect well.

That's just it...you have to stalk ebay and search multiple times a day. I usually search buy it now, but one of my cases was an auction and I was the only bidder.

I like the Poetic Slimline cases, too; I've got them for my Nexus 7 and Nook HD+. The official case looks a tad cuter, so I'll hold out.

I'll bookmark the search and check when I think of it. It's not a pressing need, or even a pressing want, but I'd like one. It's the whole problem with covers; the official ones cost an insane percentage of the price of the gadget itself and I just won't.

Re. 5.0.1 : it only appeared to me after I did a Factory Reset (which I wanted to do anyway as I wanted to clean my device). It then asked whether I wanted to restore, saying it would at the same time install a pending FW. I said yes and there was 5.0.1 all of a sudden.

I think it is a much better FW as the 4.X.X versions were. I do not miss the carousel at all. I have it now working perfectly fine with my Overdrive, Zinio, Hoopla and Onleihe accounts. It did not play nice with those apps before, which was the reason for me to cease using it and for it becoming a paperweight.

I did not get and was not planning on getting any new tablets this season, so this is a nice surprise. Kind of a new device...

After I saw your post, I tried that with my HD6 and it did not work for me. I am still on 4.5.5. Restore worked pretty good overall, I did have to re-install apps of course that I side loaded over my Nexus or phone. Now of course I have to sign in again to everything.

I got exited when it said the thing about including the latest update with this backup, but alas, not for me apparently.

Oh well, was worth a try and I think it needed a fresh start anyway.

I never had any issues with overdrive of hoopla on my 6 though. Nor with 3m and onceclickmedia. I think those are all the library type apps I have on there.

I did not mean for anyone to follow my example, I just wanted to say that sometime, the update is already there, waiting somehow to be installed...

I am in Europe most of the time but have subscriptions in the US because I am there quite often too, and my Fire did not like me going from one continent to another much. It worked fine with the european subscriptions in Europe and the american ones in the US, but it was a different stories when trying to use onleihe in the US or hoopla in Europe. Now (in Europe) it all works fine, I just left the US so I'll have to wait for my next trip to see how onleihe works over there.

No no, don't worry. Really. I know what happens when you do factory restore. I like to do it every few months anyway. With the restore feature its not really a big deal. Its all as it was. Just a couple of aps have to be added and then sign back into others. Only took a few minutes.
It was a good thought and I did get exited when it said it would add any new update. But I am in no hurry really, it gets here when it gets here.

Makes sense now with your app problems with the geo issues.

Is all good and my Fire is nice and "clean" now and swift. Although it wasn't really slow or anything. I just think after using those things for a while, it is helpful to start fresh once in a while. Easy peasy really.

Feedback on 5.0.1 on a Fire HD 6 after a week or so of heavy usage :

The Good:

For those used to Android, the handling makes much more sense now
The Fire HD 6 is quicker in general
It also seems to handle different geo regions much better with some apps and does not mind so much where you actually are
You can still have Google Play without root, a big plus for me, and install your android apps, including the paid ones (big, big plus imho), as for instance Mantano Reader and what not

The Neutral

The Carousel is gone. I did not like it, so I am happy, but I know it was a particularity of the Fires that some enjoyed having. It made sense if you bought everything at amazon, less if, like me, you use the device but not necessarily the amazon apps.

The Bad / Real Bad

Silk is still a major pain. It looks good, its great when it works, but it does not work half of the time. It freezes, it won't load, it won't close, you name it. I really feel that Amazon is letting a great concept go down the drain in the realization.n the
It has glitches, outside of Silk. A few examples: I never had problems with autorotation until now. It worked when I had it on, it stopped when I blocked it, everything was good. Now, I am afraid of opening my cover and finding out it has ceased working because only a hard reboot brings it back
Ditto for Silk
Ditto for the appstore (the amazon one)
Ditto for maps
Ditto for the Wallpaper (... I know, right !!!?)
AKA : I spend my time with my finger on the on/off button. This is only a mild exaggeration. The more I test it, the more glitches I find.
Last but not least: Stagefright finds not one but two vulnerabilities

For those who have not received it yet: feel blessed. I think 5.0.1 will not be sent OTA to normal (non-dev) users but that you guys will jump to 5.0.2 or whatever version they are working on now.

I've got 5.0.1 and so far, I prefer it, with no major issues. But I haven't really put it through its paces and I never use the Silk browser; I use Chrome as my default and Firefox when I need another one.

On a side note: Kodi works fine on my Fire, but I guess it did work well too on 4.X.X, I just never tested it. There is a great TV serie running on RTVE about Carlos V (Charles Quint in French, no idea how he was called in English) and I keep missing the episodes while they are showing them because I have been out of Spain a lot since the serie started at the beginning of september. Anyway, thanks to Kodi I can watch them at my rythm, whether I am in Spain or not. I have it on my PC and my other tablet, now it also works on the HD 6, which is nice.

If only my HD had more space..I always have a micro usb stick with me but I wish I had bought the 16 GB version instead of the 8 GB one..

Also, I saw the new fire 7 today. So glad I picked up the HD 6 (on a whim really) on my trip to the US last year, because the display of the new 7 is real crap. This year I came back from the US empty handed (electronicswise

) which was kinda disappointing

New and tested : HD 6 on Lollipop is rootable. I rooted mine very quickly and easily, thanks to this excellent guide (at xda of course, where else) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire...-os-5-t3172408.

I know hope for the devs there to find a way for twrp again on 5.x.x...
