OK, it's lovely but I'm having trouble getting it online. I've got it plugged into my wired network via ethernet, and it's also found and recognised my nearest wireless AP, but when I try to connect it just says "Unsuccessful".
I went to their website and registered and it sent me a username (my email address) and a password (which I'm not sure I can even enter into the iliad since I haven't found out how to enter '#' character yet!). Plus an activation link, which I followed. Filled out the form there and changed my password. I put the new, changed password into the Iliad config page, entered my username as "stinky ox" and my email address as what it is - is this correct procedure? I'd like to at least see a successful logon - I'll be wanting those software updates! any advice from other users? |

Your username is the same as your email address Stinky...
The unsuccessful connection attempt could be due to DHCP problem or some other router thingy. For me it was that my router was only allowed to give out 5 IP's (I set that up some time...) and already had them all reserved for static routing...so the Iliad didn't receive an IP and I got errors for both WLAN and Wireless. Chekc your settings and try again. |

Bah, still not working. Doesn't help that there is *no* diagnostic stuff at all displayed, just the message "failed". The router is set to issue DHCP to everything, and everything else on the LAN is fine, the xbox360 connects fine on the wired side and even the Ninty DS connects from the wireless.
I *need* to get this thing online, I'll need those software updates! Bit disappointed that this is proving tricky, actually. Effortless connectivity is necessary these days, especially with a device that appears to give no helpful diagnostic info at all and which has no way of configuring manual settings... |

ah, I think I sorted it, extended the range of DHCP addresses and retried. It displayed "connecting to server" then "download complete".
Jeez, I didn't think I had more than 10 things on my lan needing addresses... guess I do! ![]() |

they should provide a way to download the updates 'manually' and install them. you know, there are still people out there w/o wlan (not me, oooooh no) |

You can plug it in to the wired network too, so no problems even if you don't have wifi

and don't forget the offline flashing utility (via usb) we will need if the first of us bricked his iliad. Please, anonymous iRex guy, could you do us this favour?

Well, first impressions so far are very positive. I'll get the moaning out of the way first - the recharge and connections through the supplied pod *are* a bit clunky; the umbilical that connects the pod to the iLiad as mentioned before is a bit stiff, and if you're doing aught but laying the thing flat when it's connected you do worry a bit about putting a strain on the thin little connector. I'd've preferred power, USB and eth ports on one of the edges like on my origami - the bottom edge is fat enough for them I'd've thought.
The display is really lovely. Just like paper you do need to be in reasonable light to read. Out in the sunshine it's *stunning* (at *last* a device I can use outdoors!). The device is light and comfortable to hold. At the moment of course you really need the *right* PDFs to read with it since there's no zoom option yet but we all know that the software is unfinished at the moment. What's there is eminently usable if you have stuff that's natively the right size. I am getting the same trouble that others have with intermittent recognition of my SD card - sometimes I need to re-insert it a few times before it gets read correctly. I suspect this may be due to the fact that it takes quite a deep push to get it to lock in, and sometimes it comes out again and requires a second push. Perhaps it starts to read it and then when it disappears again gets confused so when you do get it to go in it doesn't have the index. Maybe adding a short delay before reading the index would fix that, I dunno. Annotation seems to work well, with the display being updated quicker than I thought it would be. Mine came with no templates - thanks to those who put the missing content online ![]() |
