Actually, it runs fine for me except when accessing the store. The store is basically a web site and the software is a browser with a bit of smarts in it on how to pass authentication and such. So, they really need to work on the performance of their back end to speed it up.

Wow you are right. I was checking a book that sold for more than the kindle edition just a few weeks ago and now it's $9.99, which is even lower than the kindle version being sold at $13.22.

Had idea: install ADE then retry ebook library No go. (PPC ADE actually appears to work well though!)
After which I tried "upgrade" (a reinstallation by any other name is still a reinstallation, one would hope). Again, no go.
Will contact Sony, they may want to hear about this! (Phone call to .us prohibitedly expensive, will try e-mail).

I installed on my Mac (10.5.7) and it went well. Everything worked except for the authorizing my reader to the eBook store. I have a Sony 505, but everytime the store attempts to register it, I get the message: "Unable to access eBook Store. Check your network setting to ensure you have access to the internet."

Which is silly because I am able to shop, browse through the store and even purchase, but I just can't register my reader, so the book I just bought won't work...

Close it and reopen (and disconnect the device). Then open it again and plug in the Reader and see if it works.

Mac Version leaves the PRS-500 in the dust.

I'm very disappointed. Us 500 users were "proof of concept" for Sony, and to be abandoned at this point is annoying beyond belief. Yeah I already know it won't support ePUB, but not even a connection to the device? And the installer littered my drive with like 10 files!

Any news on future 500 support? (Okay, okay, you can stop laughing now! )

Yep, did that, my computer is authorized fine, but it just won't authorize the Reader. Everytime it tries, I get the message that I'm not connected to the internet...

Is it saying it's not authorized without you asking?

Also, are you on Wifi?

Do you have your firewall turned on? If so, it is possible that is the problem... standard traffic probably uses port 80 or 443 which will be allowed... but others might not be.

Although strange your Mac would register but not the reader.

I know when the first came out with the last new readers a bunch of people had connection issues and it was just Sonys servers being overloaded. Wait a little while and try again might just be the ticket.

I share your pain. I rarely use my 500, but would be happy if it was more Mac friendly. My girlfriend adopted it after I got a 505, so it's still very much loved.

When she wants more books loaded onto it, the task falls to me since she doesn't even want to know the work-arounds to get books on it...

Nope, firewall isn't the problem. Good insight on the servers being overloaded. I didn't think of that. I'll wait a bit. Hey, we waited this long for a mac version, so I guess I can keep on waiting a bit. Thanks for the tip!!

Also, you already had the 505 right? Had you not already registered it to your Sony account using a Windows PC or Windows VM?

I was wondering if this was my problem--I already had the 505, but have never registered it with Sony. I never had access to a Windows machine or software, so have never bought a book for it. I have always just been using the books from mobileread's awesome library....

Oh, ok, then that shouldn't make a difference. Have you upgraded it to the most recent firmware? I wonder if that has something to do with it. I seem to recall there was some mention of a firmware upgrade to support the devices working with the Mac. Perhaps it is needed to register on the Mac... I have no idea.

You might want to shoot an email to Sony tech support.

Well, I purchased a book and when I click on "synch" to transfer my purchased book to my reader, it tells me that my reader isn't authorized yet. Then it askes me if I would like to authorize it.

When I click yes, it goes to a screen that says I'm not connected to internet. But it registered this computer fine, let me set up an account, use my credit card, etc. So it's a bit puzzling...
