As for converting an image to the format needed by pickel, this thread might give you some information to start with. As for displaying an image with pickel, you can have a look at 90_bootselect.sh. I guess, this is the file you want to deal with anyway.

Couldn’t get it right. got the raw image, ffmpeg it to bmp as you point me, change its resolution, got it back to raw, and to gz after that, but didn’t display well at all on the gloHD (the image is displayed diagonally and repetitively (i could see more that one occurence of the text on the screen). Forgot to take screenshots as it was the first test i did and the best one I got. could it be related to the 300ppi of the glo HD ? or the orientation of the image (i tried several initial position without success) ?

diagonally/repetively usually means you got the wrong dimensions and/or color depth when converting

if it doesn't have to be pickel, you could also use pngshow which you can find in my github and some mods of mine (screensaver for example), it just shows regular PNG images...

I am seeing the same when I try to convert the Glo HD raw image files. I have no idea how to find the correct values for ffmpeg.
The next thing I was going to propose was using pngshow.

I was thinking about that too ! Till now I Just used pickel with the coordinates (upper left for nickel and lower right for koreader) It’s just fine to run the applications but there is an issue when shutting off from koreader (the screen won’t refresh to black or whatever) thus pngshow seems the best option here. I’ll try this week (any trick to know if I just want to install pngshow only (other than put it in usr/local/... )? and use it by calling it )

mode "1072x1448-45"
# D: 80.000 MHz, H: 65.681 kHz, V: 45.049 Hz
geometry 1072 1448 1088 3072 16
timings 12500 16 102 4 4 28 2
accel false
rgba 5/11,6/5,5/0,0/0
endmode

if you used 1072, try with 1088 instead (or vice versa)

For Kobo Glo HD you can use these settings for ffmpeg. Have a look at attached images too as an example.

raw -> png
Code:
ffmpeg -f rawvideo -pix_fmt rgb565 -s 1088x1440 -i <(head -c 3133440 "alyssum-menu.raw") -y "alyssum-menu.png" < /dev/null
png -> raw
Code:
ffmpeg -i alyssum-menu.png -f rawvideo -pix_fmt rgb565 -s 1088x1440 -y alyssum-menu-new.raw < /dev/null
Attached Thumbnails
Click image for larger version

Hi Traycold,
(Did you test it on kobo screen afterward ? I ask because I had no problem to decode it to bmp, it’s when reencoding it and trying to display it that it went wrong.)

The sample you provide is working ! many thanks ! 1088 did the trick, obviously.
But i can’t decode the raw to png using your line of code

I don't have the kobo with me now, so I can't test the png->raw part, but I tested the raw->png conversion right now on my PC and it works correctly (I used the gzipped raw attached to previous message, of course after unzipping it).

Hi traycold,

Ok, so I did a mistake. I tried to use your lines to decode the actual raws in the package provided by Shadoooo (the one from this post). Perhaps what I must do is : raws from the package to bmp with the lines provided by tshering, save them in png and reencode them with your lines ? I didn’t try to decode the raw you provided obviously it’s working. I’ll try that this morning anyway.

the raw in the package you mentioned are gzipped. So first of all you have to gunzip them:
Code:
gunzip anImage.raw.gz
# you get anImage.raw
Then, consider that the dimension of those images is specific for the dimension of the reader (in fact there is the reader model in the filename), so you have to change the X and Y values when converting to PNG (tip: the raw filesize in bit should be X-dim * Y-dim * 2; so the images for glohd are bigger than those of kobo glo, etc..).

If you want to create images for glo hd, just take any png image you want, change the dimention to 1088 x 1440, convert it to raw and gzip it.

No need to use bpm format.
