Sorry, Harmon, o you mean Spotify is going to get more power than Apple in the music game ?
Turn out their own devices, content, and research and development ? I don't think so.... And I don't think Spotify is going to stop the juggernaut that is "i" ![]() Last edited by carpetmojo; 08-27-2011 at 10:07 AM. |

Regarding that photo.........
And, if I may, in response to G A Russell, I truly feel that posting that photo was in incredibly bad taste, pretty sick, and disgusting to use it in what seemed to me to be a faint attempt at humour, and totally unneccessary to the discussion.
I also object to the fact that I was "hooked" in to viewing it, because I thought, from the way the post was worded, it was going to be an amusing image. I would not have even looked at it if I knew it was as it was. I haven't been on the Forum long, but I think most will know I'm no prude, and narrow-minded I ain't, but I was sickened by this action. I'm also not a great supporter of censorship, having experienced it personally (not here) , but if, for example, posts about DRM aren't allowed for legal reasons, I would have been happy for the Moderators to sling out such a for any reason they liked, frankly, but total lack of judgement by the poster would have done me. I'm with RainingLemur, kjd, and I'm sure many other Forumites. |

Steve Jobs was named the Chairman of Apple this week. I don't think that it is unreasonable to see what the new Chairman of Apple looks like, just as I don't think that it would be unreasonable to see what a new Chairman of ExxonMobil looks like. |

I didn't even know what illness Jobs has - don't forget, I'm not fascinated by the activities of Apple etc.. so am only now, from this thread, aware of the area of this poor man's illness, only that he was not well. I didn't want to know, frankly. The reference to the photo putting an end to debate, I presumed, was to show him in good health, and doing something that showed he was OK. i.e. an attempt at humour, which it might have been in that case. So that is why I have no fear of "looking in the mirror" - because I did not expect to see photos of a very sick man, or have any desire to. Unlike the OP, who saw fit, having seen them, and knowing what they portrayed, decided to broadcast them on the forum - which would obviously cause great distress to anyone who knew him, or indeed anyone with any feelings, or appreciation of his circumstances. And nothing was said about "proof", or the contents of the photos, in the post, so how you leap from the contents of my words, to me expecting "good news" defies commonsense. And, finally, you have no need to lecture me about my attitude to those suffering from cancer, or the position or expectations of those close to them...... I have lost 2 members of my family to cancer, tending one, have a close friend with an incurable diagnosis, and had a scare myself, so that is a lot of the reason why I found the OP's contribution unhelpful in any meaningful way, in such bad taste, showed little consideration for other people, and was completely unnecessary - why should we need explicit proof of such a thing that we have no right or need to know. I would suggest that should he/she ever feel a similar need to do anything similar, they think once, think twice, and then do what they think is right. Because I can't believe you had any thought about other people's feelings. I apologise to everyone if this has descended into a boring rant, and something of a personal attack, for I was extremely upset over this post, but I make no apology for my response. I also realise that, to be true to myself, I must support their right to do as they please - I just hope they'll be more considerate next time. Last edited by carpetmojo; 08-27-2011 at 04:52 PM. |

I generally love Apple products because they are efficient and have lasted longer than other devices. I have no feelings for the iPad, but it does not mean that it has not changed how tablets are now part of our world. (Plus I'm used to touchscreen, thus decision to get Nook STR!)
I have said this a couple of times before but I truly think that they are of better value to me. The Macbook I'm typing this on is 4 years old and going on strong (way less laggy than my sister's 1-year old HP laptop at 2/3 the price); I have had my 3G iPhone for 3 years, a wonder compared to all my other handphones which lasted me less than 2 years; my brother is still using my first iPod 5G which is now going on 6 years. I mean, I can pretend to be cool yet produce less waste, because in this world, the brand name goes a longer way than the product's generation. A MacBook that is falling to pieces? It's still cool! Thank you. (Most of us buy things to be cool in our minds, no need for denial.) I accidentally saw that picture while surfing the internet aimlessly yesterday, and I have regretted clicking on the link since. Steve Jobs is no less ambitious than most other people; he just happens to be successful. I hate paparazzi pictures. I wish him all the best in his private life! |

![]() Apologies, but this always makes me sigh. Napster has been operating legally since 2003, with the same paid subscription service that now supports Spotify and with a bigger catalogue. They tried the ad-supported free music concept a couple of years before Spotify launched and like Spotify found that it wasn't sustainable. I've used their paid service for 6 years now, and it's excellent, both to the desktop and via the Android and iPhone apps (though a black mark is the lower bit rate on the apps). Yet Spotify has the mindshare. Here comes the sigh. <sigh> Graham |

And I find it in bad taste that you expected amusement from a discussion on somebody's health. I'm not sure who you are talking to here, because I wasn't the one who posted the link. |

I don't know how it's been reported in other contries, but here in Sweden you have to pretty much have been away from any kind of newsmedia for the last few days to not have heard about Jobs' resignation and his illness.
(The offending picture has also been widely publicized, although not until sometimes during the weekend.) |

[QUOTE=Sil_liS;1....[/QUOTE]
OK, final attempt......... I am sure others are as bored by this as I am, but I cannot accept your incorrect interpretation of my motive, or expectations. Hard as it may be to accept, I didn't ignore this, I simply wasn't interested in the least, so didn't know about it. I read the first few posts in the thread, to Harmon probably, went back, saw the picture, felt appalled, and posted. I have not read any more. I did not expect amusement from someone's health, I expected to find exactly the opposite, as I stated. And I did read the post, didn't bother with the small print, I never do - is it obligatory ? Finally, I apologise for putting "you", in the "heat" of replying. I meant the OP, and I stand by my words in regard to his actions. In this instance, I see no reason to alter my opinions, or my words about how I reacted I am content I have done all I can to explain my words and feelings, and can, and will, do no more. |

You could write and interesting anthropological paper on this thread.
The clash of cultures of public and private is interesting. For better or worst however, those leading a publicly traded company (as successful as Apple) much like those with celebrity (which Steve Jobs has) tend to lose those elements of privacy that you personally may value. It has been interesting to see the reporting around this, particularly when I get a sense that much has been written based upon very little true insight. I personally don't know what Steve is like as an individual, I've heard enough stories on both sides of virtue to believe he is like many people with his good and bad. Nor do I have a clear idea on the line between him and the achievements of Apple as a company, though you can't help but attribute some of it to him. I think as some have already said, Apple will continue to be successful for the foreseeable future. Steve is still part of the company (as Chairman & Employee) and while there may be some reflection on his capacity in light of his reported illness there is enough of a trajectory, and the bedrock of many existing individuals like Tim Cook who will (to my mind) see the company continue to move forward. Indeed I suspect that it may even be an opportunity for some of those whose input was not so publicly celebrated to be illuminated, if not acknowledged. Anyway whilst I think this is a notable development in light of the Steve that is painted (iconic, irreplaceable, genius etc..), I think Apple as a company will be fine. As to Steve himself I do personally wish him good health (in the same way I would also wish anyone, even my local garbage man good health). Last edited by molman; 08-28-2011 at 10:45 PM.
