1. about 25% of his works not related to the below two categories 2. all the schribner's juveniles 3. all but the last two of his future history series related works. i'm stuck on 'time enough for love' and because of that haven't started 'to sail beyond the sunset'. (the last two of the future history series) 'time enough for love' is making me nuts!! i usually start a book and hungrily plow through it till i'm done and then lament the fact that it's over and i must abandon those characters and all the interesting and unusual places where the story took place. not so with 'time enough for love', and i don't remember feeling at all this way the first/other times i've read it. perhaps it's my age tanstaafl |

Here's my literary confession (triggered by avatar above): I hated Jim Butcher's "Storm Front". I thought it was the silliest thing I'd ever read, completely driven by coincidence and heavily telegraphed author contrivances, and it was served with a heavy side order of misogyny and stereotypes.

I liked Storm Front but hated Fool Moon. I enjoyed book 3 and I've heard it only gets better from there.

I've not read the latest, but was thoroughly enjoying the series all the way up to the end of the second to last book. The way I felt about the ending of that book was as if Butcher just was like "Rocks fall, everyone dies".

I have a friend who is a Dresden fanatic. He said that Butcher was ramping up to end the series, IIRC.

The good news is that he delivers them regularly. The bad news is that they are pretty predictable and the one person point of view has gotten old. Well, for me, it has gotten old. I read the books but they are not a must buy and read on the first day any more. I didn't even realize that the latest one had been released until I saw people discussing. It took me a 5 hour plane ride to read it. (shrugs) I think that the problem with a series of this length, and Wheel of Time and LOTR and other such long running series, is that it gets to the point where you are screaming "Get on with it all ready". In Dresden's case, each book the characters move farther and farther away from their original dispositions and it gets more and more depressing with no real sense that it is going to get better. I don't like how some of the characters have changed, even if the changes are realistic. At least JKR was able to limit herself to one book per year in school. Jim Butcher needed to find a similar device for Dresden. He was able to do it with the Codex Alera series. Just one persons opinion. |
