I wonder this too sometimes.
People complains and complains, and yet. They don't dare speaking the only way that would be listened too. |

The answer is that it's usually not as important to people as they publicly profess it to be. Exaggerated public outrage is more fun than quietly sticking to one's own ideals.

That's assuming one has ideals. I do not. I complain because an unremovable DRM doesn't let me edit my ebooks and make back-up copies, not because I have lofty principles about DRM. And I buy from Amazon as long as DRM can still be removed. I will never buy an ebook with an unremovable DRM, because I don't want to read an ebook I haven't edited first. Nothing to do with ideals or principles.

So even though you're able to do what you need to do to keep buying from Amazon, you still choose to publicly complain (and purchase). You're entirely certain there's no ideals in play there?

I don't buy most of my books from Amazon these days, but some are not available elsewhere. So I buy those from Amazon while howling, crying and gnashing my teeth loudly and publicly. Because public complaining is fun, as you said. |

I think two inconvenient factors are being ignored. One, sufficient collective action by those who deplore Amazon’s practices just might have an effect. Yep, it’s not much on the individual level, but it’s like voting; it’s what you can do and it matters in the aggregate. And there is a moral component to supporting heinous practices and complaining about them.
And two, so what if some books are unavailable elsewhere? I’m a broken record on this (do kids these days know where that came from?). Read something else. There are a lot of books out there, you’ll never be able to read everything, books are not a life saving drug, etc, etc. ETA: Oh, and I can’t resist a third. You agree to use limitations when you buy from Amazon, but then complain about them? Amazon’s got the moral high ground here, doing what it can to enforce the terms of something the buyer agreed to! As I said, I have very few principles and I don't even live by those that I do have. Moral component? Can't really say I care - my own interests come first. The same for knowingly breaking Amazon's TOS - my own interests come first. I'm that kind of person.
As to not buying Kindle exclusives - why not, as long as I can still remove the DRM? I want a book, I can remove the DRM, I buy it. I can't remove the DRM, I won't buy it. Moral considerations or principles play no part in this for me. |

Along with not buying Kindle books, I've emailed several Kindle-exclusive authors expressing interest in reading their books if they ever went wide.
Sadly, it's just small actions against the monopolistic practices of Amazon. |

I don't think a company that big wouldn't be able by itself to start those disputes just to be sure those will never land. Probably I'm skeptical, but can't trust them. Anyway I'm not angry about, to me looks only as companies policies, and luckily can do without. Edit: btw, some companies dropped Amazon, e.g. Vans has just sneakers in there, no cush-up insole versions; Yamamay literally dropped it, and pretty sure several others reputable too.
