I am retired from a career in software development and have been an avid reader my entire life. For me reverse engineering aspects of the Kindle ecosystem is right in the intersection of my main interests. While I despise what Amazon is doing in the interest of maintaining lock in to their platform I also relish the challenge involved in keeping up with their ongoing changes and understanding how it all works.

Well I remember posting not long ago about how I was going to stop using Amazon altogether as removal of D&T was the last straw for me. I also remember how a lot of comments on that thread amounted to 'you can't live without Amazon, you'll be back' or 'just keep Amazon as you will need it in the future' - surprising how opinions seemed to have changed!
I would guess for most of the world it boils down to convenience, those extra few clicks needed to purchase and read an ebook from another supplier is too much hassle. I've found getting rid of my Amazon account (6 months ago now) has been easy, I have not missed out on anything, and have been able to purchase everything I've wanted from other places, it can be done ![]() |

MR members are atypical. Most people don't even realize they're under any restrictions. If a thing doesn't work or can't be done, they just think that's how it is. It doesn't occur to them to find a solution or alternative. If one is suggested to them, it will sound more complicated than they want to bother with

I was talking with elder person in a pirate forum about digital comics that wanted pay the digital copy of the comics that he already owns.
I explained him all the road to dedrm the ebook and he rejected because it's too hard so he continues to download a digital copy of comics that he already owns (so he's not damaging no one person!) I am not incouraging the piracy but if the legality is too hard the people will choose the piracy and this is sad, i'd want a comfy legal way to buy digital products. P.s.: anyway with all difficulties i buy the comics that i read. Last edited by mitra1; 09-04-2025 at 11:50 AM. |

Keep in mind that there's a huge difference between removing DRM from ebooks you paid for, and mistakenly believing that one is entitled to a free digital copy of something just because they already own in it in physical form.

What about scanning your own copy of a book? I've done that with some short ones. mostly my late grandfather's recipe booklet collection.

Making your own ebooks from copyrighted content you have in your possession (for your own use) may break the letter of copyright law, but in my mind... at least it's not helping pirates make money off of their website adverts. |

This is the point, if the books editor make too hard to obtain legally a book the people aren't willingly to follow the rules

Talking with the people in these forums appear clear that if the drmless books are too hard the people just buy the printed books and download a copy then studying the whole procedure to buy and remove drm. (yes, the people also if they download books also they usually buy the books, maybe after the reading of the book) |

If I search and find mostly PDF scans, it's usually out-of-print, and if I see mostly AZW3s/MOBIs, it's usually republished as Kindle-exclusive. Last edited by ownedbycats; 09-04-2025 at 06:13 PM. |

![]() My point was that no one is entitled to download a pirated copy of an ebook simply because they own a physical copy of said book. The end. |
