I tend to lust after new shiny gadgets in the case of ereaders, laptops and tablets (actually it doesn't have to be brand new in the latter two categories, a newish lightly used device will do as well). OTOH my TV is 6 years old and going strong (it wasn't an expensive model), I bought a new microwave and freezer when the old ones broke down and I tend to wear clothing/footwear until they literally have holes in them or no longer fit (occasionally buying something new, but relatively cheap - I'm very cheap about clothes, as opposed to electronics).
I have no toaster at all. The old toaster gave up the ghost a few years ago and I haven't bothered to replace it. |

We tend to not buy new stuff unless the old stuff wears out. We drive cars for years, I'm closing in on 15 years with my Vibe, but it only has 65k miles, and has a Toyota drive train.
Our microwave is 25 years old, as is the garbage disposer. The stove and fridge were replaced when they were about 18 years old, and the door fell off the stove. I like gadgets, and usually get a new iPad every 2-3 years. My iPhone is a 7+, Hubby is using a 6. We got him a new Paperwhite during the last sale, but only because he wanted to give his Paperwhite 2 to our old grandson. |

The truck is going strong, the van is hanging in there, the Mustang is on it's last legs. I read with envy of these people who have put a million miles on some old Toyota or similar. I don't think we've ever gotten more than 150k on any vehicle we've owned. They die, usually of old age, before they get any farther than that. BTW, did you know that 98% of the Fords ever made are still on the road? Yeah, the other 2% made it to their destination. Ha! |

I am using a microwave, in my store, that I bought in 1979.
I drive a 1993 S10 Pickup that just turned over 91,000 miles. I bought my first car in 1973. It was a 1973 Nova. When I drove it home my mother told me I had better keep it more than two years. I sold it in 1989 and still wish I had it. Of course I sold it because it got 8 miles to the gallon on the highway. It wasn't quite stock anymore. ![]() Apache |

I rebuilt the engine in the Nova when it hit 130,000 miles. If you preform the needed maintenance when required a car can be drivable hundred of thousands of miles. The only problem I have with the S10 is finding some parts that were not made in abundance by the manufacturer and aren't worth someone else making them. Apache |

One of our nieces drove a Camry that rolled over 300,000 miles when she sold it. It was still driving well at that point. I don't remember how old it was, 11 years maybe.
Our oldest son drove a Honda Civic, very base model, and it was well over 200,000 miles when it had major brake issues, and hit something that totaled it. It had zero bells or whistles, manual everything. Last edited by Deskisamess; 08-21-2020 at 03:54 PM. |

My 2005 Toyota Prius had 350,000+ miles on it when I totaled it last year (which didn’t take much at that point). The A/C had gone out, but I was planning to get that fixed and keep going.
But I’m less inclined to hang onto old ereaders (I have a Kindle 1 and a Kindle Touch in my museum), except to trade in for a new one. |

Returning to the OP's question, I spent 8 hours as a passenger in a car today and having left my H2O2 at home, read using the Kobo app on my OLED phone. The difference was remarkable and a clear win for my e-ink device (and possibly for confirmation bias). I could only manage an hour or so at a time on my phone, and had to keep changing the brightness and colour settings as the external lighting conditions changed. I ain't goin' nowhere without my Kobo no more, no how, no sir.

Bought a Kindle Keyboard soon after they became available in the UK and haven't looked back. Went for the 3G version and I remember sitting on a train and just buying a new book and reading it straight away with no worries about the sun being too bright. |

Nor, usually, do I - I was SO annoyed at myself for having left it behind. When I discovered its absence I was sorely tempted to ask my chauffeuse to turn around, drive the 20 minutes back home, and collect it. Self-preservation instincts kicked in and prevented me adding THAT mistake to my earlier one.

One sector that’s looking to have active development looks to be the PDF viewer/markup one, where there are a couple of 13.3” devices based on the Sony that I’ve noticed recently, albeit at the 700 to 800 USD range...
This is separate from the Remarkable 2 in the notebook-replacement sector, which should be shipping shortly. |

Hmmm... she didn't suggest using them for a funeral pyre? That's been my wife's suggestion on a couple of occasions.
