More to the point, at least for me, is that anyone who's read Henry James (or anything slightly older in general) should be familiar with the meaning. For example, I just read The Aspern Papers.

You might be surprised, I have college football season tickets at my alma mater and it's not uncommon to hear Beatles songs when I walk past various frat houses. Of course, that begs the question if the frats are actually aware of the lyrics.

At one time, there was a common set of knowledge that any educated person was expected to have, including quite a bit of English Lit. But hey, I studied books in high school that many college students how have never read. Of course, I'm over that certain age _and_ a Beatles fan.

The media made a big deal out of it when Paul McCartney turned 64.
I was never a fan of the Beatles early works. But their later music and solo music has been amazing. Sir George Martin was very positive influence on their music

I tend to tune that kind of stuff out, but seeing how that was 13 (?) years ago I may have simply forgotten. On top of which, I'm fairly sure I've listened to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band in full at least once or twice because I quite like A Day in the Life.

I just went over a YouTube playlist and the songs I don't remember having heard are Fixing A Hole and When I'm 64. (Not that I think Lovely Rita is much better or anything… but I remember it. )

I prefer The Rutles, myself.

A Day in the Life is my second favorite Beatles song. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is my favorite.

They used it as the opening theme to the World According to Garp movie, years back. That might be where I first heard the song. For sure it's where I most remember it from when I hear it now.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought a paper book. Once I got my first iPhone in 2009 I was off and away with ebooks. Then I got the Sony PRS-300 I think in the same year. I’ve had an e-reader since then and I’ve not read a physical book in more than 10 years. Apart from the instant gratification, I don’t have the space for physical books or the desire to make space for them.

However this isn’t unique to books. I’ve ditched my 20+ year CD collection and stereo the day I got the HomePod in 2018. Most of my DVDs and Blu-rays have gone. I still own a Blu-ray play but it sits collection dust and I only connected it to my TV again last year because my mother in law had some DVDs she wanted to watch when she was staying with us last year. I buy all my media in digital formats and even cut my cable subscription last year and went steaming only. I’m just not a fan of physical media at all. I prefer everything to be digital where possible.

I suppose it depends on your definition of physical media. I have moved my entire audio library onto a $50 micro sd chip. I consider that physical media, but storage is not a problem. Since I already had the CD's, that was a sunk expense. (I also spent $100 for an on-site and an off-site backup,) Streaming is a bill that continues forever.

@Greg Anos: A related quip would be that CDs and DVDs are digital formats too.

I tend to straddle both worlds. I haven't bought a physical book in 10 years, it's ebooks all the way. If there is an artist or movie that I like, I buy the cd or bluray to always have. That way I don't have to worry about them disappearing if I switch providers etc. And I can watch them when I want to and only have to pay for it once. I still use my cd and Bluray players.

Now I do usually load whatever cd's I have into an mp3 player ie my 3 smartphones as well as onto my pc and backup drive.

I am eBooks only, although I still have all of my pBooks. I keep them in case I get jury duty again. My county does not allow eBooks of any kind.
For music and audio books I still use my Onkyo DP-X1A. It has 64GB built in and can hold two micro SD cards of up to 250 GB each. I use it in my house, store, wireless earbuds and vehicles, mostly by Bluetooth.

I straddle. I've been buying exclusively ebooks and used my iPad as an ebook reader the last three times I got jury duty (Fulton County doesn't care what sort of electronics you bring while waiting to be called. You don't read anything once you hit the actual court room). I buy both digital movies and blu-ray/DVD for movies I can't get in digital. I do remove the DRM from the digital movies so I can still watch them if the store and DRM provider goes off line. Music wise, I buy digital, but it's DRM free, so it's easy enough to listen to it even if the store is off line. I do stream music, but I tend to buy music that I really like and want to keep. Can't say that I've bought a lot of music in recent years though. It's been a long time since I bought a CD, but I do buy high quality digital classic music rather than mp3's from time to time.
