For my usage pattern, the Oasis has hit the sweet spot - I get a reader that's really comfortable to hold, but still has a battery life that is long enough to exceed anything I will ever need.

Other people will clearly have different needs, but for me the Oasis hits the spot.
As a matter of interest, if you use the Oasis "naked", and then put it back into its cover, how long does the device take to recharge from its cover?

Thanks,

Again I agree, but it's not just those who struggle to hold a reader that appreciate a lighter one.

I don't struggle to hold a heavier reader, but I still definitely prefer the feel of the Oasis.

To be honest, I haven't noticed. It's sufficiently quick that it's never been an issue, and given that I know that in the worst case I can just read with it in the cover for a while, I've not bothered to measure it.

In practice, I just use it in my normal reading pattern with it out of the case when reading and in the case when not, and it's never got anywhere near running out. I've not yet had to fall back on reading with it in the case.

Please provide a link/statement from Amazon that corroborates your claim that the Voyage is no longer being made.

I'm guessing Jon means, "In the future, when the H2O and Voyage are no longer made ..."

The wording threw me off also.

Thanks,
When I first got mine, I read it in the cover because I was used to holding something with a little weight. But before too long, I decided to just try reading without the cover attached and soon got to prefer reading that way. I monitored the battery issue for a while and with my reading pattern the lowest I saw the battery level for the reader alone was in the 70s. And then I stopped worrying about it. I've never received a low battery warning since I've had it. The best reader I've owned, and the most attractive.

Thanks for the correction and sorry for the confusion. In John F's post, his first sentence said 'substrate', but his second sentence didn't so I thought he was referring to the outer screen in the second sentence. Apparently not.

Understood. I was just commenting that we currently have plastic screens, and scratches on the screen don't seem to be a significant issue. Whatever type of plastic it is they're made from, it's pretty tough stuff!

Isn't the Oasis screen also glass? From the Amazon website:

Quote:
... Kindle Oasis combines our strongest cover glass and a featherweight frame ...
And

Quote:
... Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the micro-etched glass screen is crafted to eliminate glare and feel like paper to the touch. ...

The screens do seem to hold up well (for plastic). The early Nook (Simple Touch?) were "notorious" for their poor plastic screen, i.e. the key drop test. But I haven't heard of any problems for a while. I believe I've noticed scratches on either the Aura HD or H2O, but they were abused and they didn't cause bright spots.

No problem. Think of how light the Oasis could be with a plastic substrate and plastic screen. And since the Oasis is designed with the integral cover, why not use a plastic screen?

Perhaps because glass gives better clarity to the screen?
