Yeah thats what expected. (Should not turn on its wireless)

The previous update greatly annoyed me by wiping out all my collections (I had about 400-500 books on my Kindle in about 30 collections) The books were still there but the collections were gone. I had to manually rebuild them all over again, and I am sure there are some I forgot about. Which is why I was making an effort to never turn on wireless.

But I have no clue how the wireless came on last night.

At least this time my collections survived the update and the dots are back.....

Now if only the PaperWhite would support all 4 screen orientations like the K3 did.
The 2 orientations the PaperWhite uses are the ones I did not use on the K3 because of the plug location. (I prefer the plug on the top or the right when I am reading it while its plugged in)

And wouldn't you know it, they cut it from 4 to 2 on the PaperWhite and they were the wrong ones as far as I am concerned.

Do you need to keep it plugged in while reading? Even if the battery was almost flat a short charge will allow you to read without it being plugged in for a little while, charge it while you go make a cuppa, or while in the shower or something and you can take the plug out to read. Seems a bit of a minor whinge

None of my kindles has ever turned the wireless on. K3, k4, k5.

My Kindle Fire has updated itself once while on plane mode.

If it updated while in Airplane Mode/when the WiFi was turned off...

Then my first assumption is "it wasn't really off, you were mistaken".
My second assumption would be "The update was downloaded at some point in the past and it just restarted". I'm not sure of the exact steps for an OTA update, since I don't usually wait for or allow them, but I don't think the framework runs them instantaneously, and I am not sure how long it might wait.

If it was instantaneous, that would randomly restart while you are reading, something Amazon doesn't want.

And I will contribute my agreement that "Airplane Mode" is not a lie.

My Voyage just updated! I know because I got the dots back. There are also checkmarks! Does anyone know what those mean? I assume they just mark books that are downloaded, i.e. not in the cloud, but I don't want to click on one of them and find out something drastic happens.

Also, do you know where to find what software version the kindle has? I used to be able to find it somewhere in settings but I noticed a few weeks ago that it is no where that I can find.

Page flip looks interesting. I will have to try it once I finish my current book.

Go to Settings, click menu (three dots) and select Device info.

The ones you never use while reading and charging at the same time, which must be a minuscule part of your Kindle usage. If you plugged your Kindle in to charge, went off to type up your complaint email to Amazon and then came back your Kindle would be charged enough to read without it being plugged in.

I'm just off to email Texaco as I cannot refuel my car while I am driving it.

No, I used those same orientations ALL the Time.... Whether I was charging or not.

With the old K3, I had a cover... I preferred NOT to fold it back behind the kindle. (I never broke its spine so it would fold back) so my typical reading position was with the kindle like a laptop. With the cover positioned like a keyboard with the reading area propped up like a laptop monitor. This way if I was holding it, my hand was touching the leather cover (which is easily cleaned of sweat, oils and dirt that might transfer from my hand.) and not the felt inner lining (which was not easily cleaned) that when closed would be in contact with the Kindle screen.

My Current cover flaps in the wind so to speak because I still prefer to have my hand in contact with the (plastic?) book cover and not the inside lining of the flap if you fold it all the way back...

I caught this as I forgot to turn the wifi off after syncing instapaper.
I need this as I need the proverbial hole in my head. Please, is there any way to get rid of it and return to 5.6.1? This is so totally unneccessary.

You can use the new software jailbreak from the Kindle Developer's Corner subforum.

The first step is a downgrade using special factory images that isn't blocked like standard update_*.bin downgrades.
