I am not sure whether you are interested in updating the Catalan patch for FW 3.16.0. Anyway, I am providing here some materials.
I explain shortly what I did:

• I run the last translation file (I took it from this post) against nickel 3.16.0 in order to see which strings are getting refused. You can find the information in errors_ca3150_against_nickel3160.txt.
• I extracted the Spanish translation strings from nickel 3.16.0. You can find them in nickel_18C978.tr.es_export01_grt.txt and nickel_18C978.tr.es_export02_grt.txt.
• I run the Spanish translitation strings agains nickel 3.15.0 to see which strings are getting refused. You can find the information in errors_es3160_against_nickel3150.txt

By comparing those four files you can identify the changes that have to be done.

4) I prepared a patcher for replacing the Spanish translation strings with numbers.

Here's some friendly advice if you guys are this deep into hex editing the binaries:

You should be able to extract these files into Qt's .TS format. You can run lrelease on the file to convert it into a .qm file.

If you've run strace on nickel, you've seen that it attempts to sideload from /usr/local/Kobo/translations/trans_*.qm and then it'll fallback onto extracting the resource from libnickel.

I am very interested in translating the catalan for each new version. I was expecting your tools to learn. I want to study it to see if I can translate it myself .

I did not find the time to finish my tools. Anyway, I will follow george.talusan's friendly advice. I just looked a little into lrelease, and it seems promising. I will do some tests tomorrow or at the weekend. With this approach, the length of the translation strings will not be restricted to the length of the original translations.

Oh man, that would be great news if string length would be no more of a problem! I gave up a bit on translating UI to polish as I found that to many strings would have to be shortened to much. And that kind of makes no sense..

Why not 3.16.0? There have been several changes.

Well, I thought that 3.16 is only for Glo HD and Touch so most people are still using 3.15. But if there is a way to build translation for 3.16 and 3.15 without much work then I can do it this way. I wonder when 3.16 for other devices can be expected. Or is it safe to use 3.16 on other then those two mentioned readers?

There are several differences in the translation strings of 3.15 and 3.16. Therefore it would require some effort to update a translation file from 3.15 to 3.16 (or to "downdate" from 3.16 to 3.15). One will have to update the translation files for some future firmwares too. But since the necessary changes that needed to be done for the Touch to use the same style as the other supported models seem to be finished by now, I do not expect great changes in the near future.
It should be safe to use FW 3.16.0 on all models. Cf. the discussion in the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware thread.
I will upload the translation file sometime during this day.
