Kobos are very fussy about font filenames. The external filename needs to match the internal filename. Try this thread.

P.S. Congrats for trying a walk on the Kobo wildside .

That was the thread I was using to learn about the fonts. I guess I assumed that the links to the fonts in that thread would have the filenames formatted correctly.

But now I see that the names of the fonts I downloaded from that thread aren't formatted according to the rules. Like the CharisSILCompact Bold font is named: "CharisSILB.ttf". So (for example) I should rename that font to: "CharisSILCompact-Bold.ttf", and then it should work?

Judith, by chance, are you putting the fonts in separate folders within the font folder? If you are, remove them from the folders and just copy the fonts files (on their own, not in a folder) into the font folder. And on a side note, the advanced function is not available for sideloaded fonts. You can change that if you patch your kobo, however.

That was it! Thanks!! I removed them from the folders, renamed them, and now they're working.

It'll be nice to be able to patch it some day. It seemed to me, from reading other recent threads, that the Start Menu program and the KOreader aren't exactly polished and ready for the H2O yet. It'll be fun to try the KOreader on the device.

Yay! So glad it's working for you now! I patched mine mainly because I wanted the advanced options and some other small changes, maybe not a big deal to most people though.

Do you think it was easy to patch it? The instructions looked unfinished and shady to me, so I didn't feel very comfortable with it. I think one of the developers said he was going to release good instructions for the H2O within the next couple days.

BTW I tried out the kepub thing, and the page turns really were much faster. I ended up converting all the recent books I'm reading. I'd like to eventually do the patches that remove the header and shrink the footer, but I'm not in a hurry for that.

I'm just happy with how easy it is to read on this thing at night, and I'm super glad I didn't just put up with the irritating light of the KV.

It's very easy, however, I ran into a problem with Win 8 on my laptop so take note if you're using Windows 8. I knew for sure I was doing it correctly, but it wouldn't create the patch, and it became a bit maddening. I noticed someone else had the same issue as me and posted about it in the developer's thread.

Using Windows 7 on my work desktop I was able to get it to work without much issue. Good to hear they are going to release new instructions. That will be helpful, I'm sure.

Glad you are using kepubs now. I was surprised to find what a difference it made. Previously when I tried highlighting it was slow going. The screen kept slowing down and flashing, now it's so much smoother. Plus faster in general with everything else. I actually really like the way kepubs render the book too. The more I used them, the more I liked how it looked. I like the title at top and the smaller footer at the bottom with page numbers. If you like the way it renders, you may not even need to bother with the patch.

Yeah, it's definitely kind of comforting how similarly it looks like a paperback book when it has the header and footer.

Ah... Paperback books! Nostalgia! Just like when we were kids. lol

Exactly! *memories* I really like it, so much so that I haven't even bothered changing anything.

Got mine today after having to drive to the post office to pick it up. Carrier didn't knock loud enough and left a note saying I was not there to sign. In any event, I have it and my total charges were $172.54 (including the shipping). Kudos to Chapters/Indigo for their amazing 3 day delivery. You can't beat that.

judith: Thanks for the tip about Pocket! I had never heard of it before but I signed up yesterday. It looks like it operates very much like Evernote.

Glad you got it so soon! Yeah, it's very awesome that it's delivered in the US in just 2-3 days. It's not too much slower than Amazon Prime shipping.

Yeah, Pocket is very useful. It's nice to setup "Send to Pocket" bookmarks on your computers, and then you can easily save an article to read later on the Kobo.

Do you have a choice on the method of shipping?

To everyone else:

Has anyone ordered from Chapters/Indigo and had it shipped to a southern state in the U.S.?

Yes - Mine got to Florida in 2 days from Chapters. It did come signature-required, but luckily it came before I left for work.

I can't fault them on shipping speed, and my cost was less than ordering directly from Kobo also

If I remember correctly, I don't think there was a choice for shipping method.

To answer a question I had asked last week that no one seemed to know the answer to:
It's evident on the shipping box that there's an ereader inside. It even lists the device name and the price. I don't like it when they do that.

I didn't have a choice in shipping method and mine was sent to a southern state-Virginia. I placed my order on Tuesday morning (11/18) and it arrived via USPS yesterday (11/21).

My packaging was identical to judith's. The name of the device and price are clearly printed on a large label on the front of the box.
