No, Hulu and Hulu Plus (and Netflix of course) are just streaming for now. Would be cool to be able to cache a show or two for offline viewing now and again.

I'm actually curious how many people actually root their Nooks.

I was a bit surprised to read that Cyanogen, one of the major players in Android rooting, reported 750K active installs since it started...a decent number, but Android is activating almost a million devices *a day*.

Well a local poll here in MR has 55% of us rooting. I'm inclined to think that is much higher than the populous simply because the folks in MR tend to be the hacking type.

That said I would still hazard a guess that the nook color is probably the most "rooted/romed" Android device simply for two reasons. The ease and detailed instructions on how to root and the horrible horrible Nook custom skin.

Also I don't know if you recall a while back when the rumor that a B&N update would prevent the ability to hack the nook was flying about. Shortly after that rumor started circulating the nook stock on the shelf sold out.

I'll be honest, if the Nook was as open as I'd like it to be, I'd buy it and not use it for B&N content, unless they were offering something better and cheaper than the other guy, so I can understand the business angle ... I just don't have to like it.
I've had my Color for a year now and it's rooted. I bought it at Best Buy and it's the only B&N product I've ever purchased.

Nook Tablet has double the internal storage of the Fire (16GB as opposed to 8GB) and it has a microSD card slot. Fire doesn't.

I guess you could download to Fire, but 8GBs would fill up quickly. From what I have read Amazon seems think most stuff should take place in the Cloud (which is fine if you always have WiFi I guess).

I suspect there will eventually be access to Android Market, altho people will have to do some tinkering. Either through rooting or having a dual boot setup. That is what I have on my Nook Color; I usually boot into what I have set up on the SDcard.

Good question.

The stock Nook Color does have basic stuff like Pandora, etc. I guess the the Nook Tablet will have more "tablet-like apps" along with more memory and processing power.

I was in a B&N yesterday and wanted to ask if they had any "literature" on Tablet, but both reps were busy and I was pressed for time (was there for another reason).

I doubt I will get one anyway. I bought an HP Touchpad during the "firesale" and am actually pretty pleased with it for now.

I have had it for years as well. Well worth it if you want to get stuff fast. It seemed as if the free shipping if over $25.00 deal was taking longer and longer to arrive. And I can ship gifts to friends/family using prime. Well worth it in my opinion.

Although, I keep wondering when they will raise the price. I know Amazon must be losing $ on me, shipping-wise!

My impression as well. Amazon seems to want to keep people in an Amazon "ecosystem."

At least that was the impression I got when I looked at Fire specs.

It's correct, neither device has access to the full market without rooting but on these forums it is apparently uncouth to not immediately declare anything Amazon related the better product.

The Kindle Fire is a great choice for cloud content and streaming; and a poor choice for onboard content.

Exactly. Cloud storage is neat and all but I certainly don't want to have to rely on it. And hey, the Nook Tablet has... wait for it... BOTH cloud and hardware expandability!

I am leaning toward buying the Nook Tablet. I had a Nook Color that I did the dual boot thing with. I found that most of the time I preferred to use the stock Nook Color operating system. Even though I mainly used the stock operating system, I liked that I knew I could use the CM7 rom when I wanted to read Kindle books or do something with an app that the Nook app store didn't have. I used an 8G micro sd card to make the CM7 dual boot and I had plenty of storage room. Of course I put some movies on the internal storage and I knew that I had the option to put more movies on other micro sd cards. My teenage daughter decided that she wanted to call MY Nook Color HERS. I decided to let her have it because I could buy either the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet. While I could probably be happy with the Kindle Fire, I don't have Prime and I think the Nook Tablet is a better value for me.

According to a post on another thread, B&N is figuring about 3% of buyers root the device. They also don't have any interest in blocking the ability to root.
