Between NC2 and the Fire, NC2 is well worth the extra $50:
  • RAM: 1GB vs 512MB
  • Storage: 16GB vs 8GB
  • Expansion: mSD vs nothing
Not to mention the people who talk about Prime being an advantage tend not to mention the $79.00 per year fee.

I hear you. I'm at 12GB on my iPod touch 4 with just apps, audiobooks, and a couple of videos. I have audiobooks that use up to 770 MB. A few audiobooks alone will eat into 6GB big time; and videos will wipe it out completely.

Amazon have movies for rent. It's still not clear as to whether or not you'll be able to download movies to the Fire. You can download to a Windows PC and something else today. Since B&N doesn't have its own content, one would need access to the Android Market to rent movies and download if one didn't want to stream.

There are folks who had Prime prior to any mention of the Fire. I've had it since it was first introduced years ago. Perhaps those who shop regularly on Amazon have it already. Also, if you're a student you can get Prime for $39, renewable at that price for 3 years. I keep mentioning this for those who can take advantage of the savings.

It seems B&N is more aggressive in working with third-party app developers. Accepting apps from international companies and forming several partnerships.

Who is getting the NOOK Tablet with no intention of rooting it? That should be the real comparison between the Fire and NOOK. Folks who are buying without regard to rooting.

It's pretty obvious if you already own a rooted NOOKcolor you have no interest in the Fire. If I didn't own an "open" tablet already, I'd be interested in the NOOK Tablet myself.

Do you think B&N is going to begin offering video content? I don't understand why they are reserving 12 GB of the available 13 GB onboard memory for their own content if they aren't. It doesn't make much sense.

Well, today was the day to mention it. Maybe they expect folks to buy a bunch of apps. Also, the fancy books with graphics and sound take up a lot of space. And the magazines I guess.

Hmm they're reserving 12GB? Ugh, i really hate B&N's tactic over this storage thing. and when they don't offer much (yet) or anything in the terms of video, it seems like a really shitty way to undermine the storage advantage over the Fire..

They have to do it to remain competitive. Amazon already offers many of these services, so they're not about to let the likes of Netflix in.

They probably need some of the space for the "record your own reading" feature, though the audio can be saved with the book on the microSD card. That's actually a pretty cool idea for a certain segment of the market. Give your kids a book that reads to them in your own voice.

Sorry for the late reply. I went to a book reading last night and didn't see your post until today.

There's a software product called DVDCatalyst 4. It's like iTunes for movies except unlike iTunes you have to buy your DVDs somewhere else. You put your DVD into the PC's drive (it's Windows only), tell it the device you want to convert to (the Nook Color is listed under "Android") and it converts the video file so it works perfectly on the little 7-inch screen.

I don't know if it can capture YouTube videos or broadcast TV but if it won't, I've heard there are tools somewhere on the Internet to record them. There are a lot of formats it can convert. It will even convert down to an iPhone sized screen. It's easier to use for file conversion than Apple's Handbrake, which was beyond my technical ability. I always got the screen size codes wrong and my output files were like looking into the mirrors in a sideshow.

well that feature may use some space, but it's still a shitty thing to do to customers, imo. advertise 16GB of space and then reserve virtually all of the usable space for B&N content.. i didn't like it on the regular Nook and I like it even less for a multimedia device when B&N doesn't offer much in the way of videos.

Hulu Plus doesn't allow downloads, does it? That would kind of make sense, but I don't have it, so I'm not sure. Maybe they'd do a special deal with B&N?

It sounds like B&N and Amazon have the same strategy - Amazon just has more strength behind theirs. Seriously, does B&N not realize how many customers bought the NC to root it? That means their own UI and rules aren't customer friendly, but it's the safeguard tactic to lock people into buying from their store. I'll be honest, if the Nook was as open as I'd like it to be, I'd buy it and not use it for B&N content, unless they were offering something better and cheaper than the other guy, so I can understand the business angle ... I just don't have to like it.
