Not to mention the people who talk about Prime being an advantage tend not to mention the $79.00 per year fee.

Amazon have movies for rent. It's still not clear as to whether or not you'll be able to download movies to the Fire. You can download to a Windows PC and something else today. Since B&N doesn't have its own content, one would need access to the Android Market to rent movies and download if one didn't want to stream.

There are folks who had Prime prior to any mention of the Fire. I've had it since it was first introduced years ago. Perhaps those who shop regularly on Amazon have it already. Also, if you're a student you can get Prime for $39, renewable at that price for 3 years. I keep mentioning this for those who can take advantage of the savings.

It seems B&N is more aggressive in working with third-party app developers. Accepting apps from international companies and forming several partnerships.

Who is getting the NOOK Tablet with no intention of rooting it? That should be the real comparison between the Fire and NOOK. Folks who are buying without regard to rooting.
It's pretty obvious if you already own a rooted NOOKcolor you have no interest in the Fire. If I didn't own an "open" tablet already, I'd be interested in the NOOK Tablet myself. Last edited by SCION; 11-07-2011 at 11:42 PM. Reason: Added NOOK Tablet for clarification. |

Hmm they're reserving 12GB? Ugh, i really hate B&N's tactic over this storage thing. and when they don't offer much (yet) or anything in the terms of video, it seems like a really shitty way to undermine the storage advantage over the Fire..

They have to do it to remain competitive. Amazon already offers many of these services, so they're not about to let the likes of Netflix in.

There's a software product called DVDCatalyst 4. It's like iTunes for movies except unlike iTunes you have to buy your DVDs somewhere else. You put your DVD into the PC's drive (it's Windows only), tell it the device you want to convert to (the Nook Color is listed under "Android") and it converts the video file so it works perfectly on the little 7-inch screen. I don't know if it can capture YouTube videos or broadcast TV but if it won't, I've heard there are tools somewhere on the Internet to record them. There are a lot of formats it can convert. It will even convert down to an iPhone sized screen. It's easier to use for file conversion than Apple's Handbrake, which was beyond my technical ability. I always got the screen size codes wrong and my output files were like looking into the mirrors in a sideshow. |

Hulu Plus doesn't allow downloads, does it? That would kind of make sense, but I don't have it, so I'm not sure. Maybe they'd do a special deal with B&N?
It sounds like B&N and Amazon have the same strategy - Amazon just has more strength behind theirs. Seriously, does B&N not realize how many customers bought the NC to root it? That means their own UI and rules aren't customer friendly, but it's the safeguard tactic to lock people into buying from their store. I'll be honest, if the Nook was as open as I'd like it to be, I'd buy it and not use it for B&N content, unless they were offering something better and cheaper than the other guy, so I can understand the business angle ... I just don't have to like it. |
