My observation is that the majority people DO comply. And I fly a reasonable amount (well over 100,000 miles per year).

Yes, some do not. But if you allowed it, you are stepping it up by an order of magnitude or more.

Yes, but I am an amateur wifi user with years and years of experience. Also, I took a couple of EE courses, once upon a time.

We need some sort of corollary to Godwin's Law - when the thread deteriorates into comparing 'credentials', then it's dead.

Time to kill this one.

You were watching whether people turned their cell phones off in planes in 1980?

There were cell phones in the 80s, and they would've been noisier, dirtier (signal-wise), and less safe than they are today. So yeah, he probably was watching that.

Yes Mr. Smartass. I actually was involved in some of initial conferences held by Motorola on Cell phone system design and deployment. I had been involved in installing, repairing and maintaining "mobile" phones and mobile phone radio repeater systems before "cell" phones even existed.

and if you don't believe me you are welcome to take a gander at my resume on my website.

Well, since you brought it up, I'm looking at your resume, and I'm not seeing much EE experience, especially related to Cell Phones and wireless networks. Looks like you have a lot more experience with software then hardware, or are you tailoring your resume?

And FWIW, "installing, repairing, and maintaining" doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Clearly, the only way to solve this argument is to award the thread to whoever can pee the farthest.

Or, in other words, I agree with Khalleron. Internet credentials do not solve arguments.

Twernt meant to make you feel good. Just a statement of fact. What experience do YOU have in the field? Oh none, I see.

Are astronauts allowed to participate? I'm sure one could devise some kind of appendage to their suits that would allow them to pee really, really far in space. But that'd be cheating I guess.

If you could actually harm a plane with a mobile phone (even a modified one with a stronger signal), I don't think they'd let you take it on the plane at all these days. So the conclusion is that these devices are harmless. Regulations aren't always right, especially when its about modern technology, like the one that says you have to overwrite a hard disk dozens of times in oder to delete data, when in reality it's not possible to restore anything that was overwritten once.

Even so, I think it's okay to have these devices turned off and tucked away (also regular old books and everything else) during start/landing. It means fewer things hitting you in the head when the plane suddenly decides to go whacky during takeoff/landing. Unless you wrist strap it like the Wii mote...
