Keep in mind that the people who drink Yerba Mate in South America carry around thermoses of hot water to refill their gourds all day. When I bought my Yerba Mate gourde, the instructions were to pack the gourd 3/4 of the way full and then listed how the taste would change between the first steeping and the 20th steeping.

Yerba Mate is a great coffee replacement for the non-caffeinated stimulant reason but it also provides a good amount of nutrients and an appetite suppressant. It became a daily part of the peoples diets because it was a less expensive way of feeling full, getting nutrients, and being able to work.

You would have to drink a ton of any beverage at a high temperature to be worried. Even my 4 Liters of tea is not dangerous because very little of it is actually consumed at 208 degrees. Smaller gourds, 3/4 packed with Mate, being refilled regularly means that they are drinking more hot liquid then we are.

We don't use gourd to drink it.
We steep it like normal tea leaves.

I had read similar reports when I was learning about Yerba Mate. If the problem really is the hot water and not the Matte, then anyone who drinks any beverage at too hot a temperature will have this problem.

My take on it was that it was linked to the Mate because of the way that the mate was drunk. Small, concentrated amounts, at very high temperature which could damage thr throat. Toss in smoking and you have an area that is vunerable due to being burnt to other problems.

(shrugs)

I did not worry about it a few years back and I am not worried about it now. I might drink a copious amount of tea but it is rarely hot enough to burn my throat.

I want another cup of coffee, but I have been having trouble with too much nervous energy lately. My goal for today is to relax and read, but will more caffiene have me pulling up the kitchen and utility room floors and putting in tile? Because that is the last thing that needs doing in my house.

I havenever burned my throat, until the last week. I have burned my throat twice on hot chinese food. I almost always get the vegetable tofu, and twice in a row, hot scalding sauce has squirted onto the back of my throat when I bit into it. Weird.
