Cross post to the romance thread, where Long Time Coming is free right now at Kindle US. I debated about whether this is a romance or a mystery, and in the end, it looks more like a romance to me. But SYKM does list it as a non-series mystery title by Edie Claire, hence the cross-post.

I remember that someone upthread didn't like this series, but I enjoyed the first ten titles or so (not ecstatic, not one of my top series, but definitely a like) back in DTB days, and so am happy to find that Eat, Drink, and Be Buried, the fourth in the Pennyfoot Hotel series by Kate Kingsbury, is free right now at Kindle US. Tastes are different, but free is good

link: https://www.amazon.com/Drink-Buried-.../dp/B00AYK8742

Spoiler:
Quote:
The fourth book in The Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery Series is now out as an eBook!

The Pennyfoot hides many secrets and its downstairs staff keeps a tight lip, even when the Edwardian aristocrats are spotted dallying with damsels in the boudoirs, or gambling in the forbidden card rooms hidden below the floorboards. Should now and then one of the hotel guests fall prey to a dastardly murderer, however, it is up to Cecily Sinclair to restore order before Scotland Yard steps in and shuts down her infamous seaside hotel.

EAT DRINK AND BE BURIED

May Day heralds the opening of the summer season at the Pennyfoot, and the downstairs staff is busy getting the hotel ready for their aristocratic guests. Festivities to celebrate are in full swing, when one of the guests is found hanging from the Maypole with a ribbon around her neck. Cecily puts herself in danger as she hunts for the mysterious killer.

The final Pennyfoot Mystery, also a Christmas edition, Mulled Murder, was published in November 2013 by Berkley Books.

An omnibus of the first three Miss Silver mysteries by Patricia Wentworth has dropped to $4.99 at Kindle US. Titles are Grey Mask, The Case Is Closed, and Lonesome Road. Sadly for me, I already have the first two, so it's not worth it to me just for the third. But if you don't have any of these yet, this is a pretty good deal.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Miss-Silver-M.../dp/B01GUO7CK0

Spoiler:
Quote:
The first three novels in the classic Miss Silver Mysteries introduce Patricia Wentworth’s beloved British governess-turned-sleuth.

In The Grey Mask, Miss Maud Silver investigates a deadly conspiratorial ring. After four years wandering the jungles of India and South America, Charles Moray has come home to England to collect his inheritance. Strangely, he finds his family estate unlocked and sees a light in one of its abandoned rooms. Eavesdropping, he learns of a conspiracy to commit a fearsome crime.

Charles’s first instinct is to let the police settle it. But then he hears her voice: Margaret, his long lost love, is part of the gang. To unravel their diabolical plot, he contacts Miss Silver, a former governess who applies her reason to solving crimes and facing the dangers of London’s underworld.

In The Case Is Closed, Miss Silver fights to free an innocent man when a new clue arises in a long-closed murder inquiry. Marion Grey is growing used to the idea that her husband will never be released from prison, especially after the horrors of the very public trial. But when new evidence suggests her husband may be innocent after all, she hires a professional—the inimitable Miss Silver—to clear his name.

In a chance encounter on a busy train, a friend of Marion’s meets a mysterious man who disappeared during the trial, and who may know something that could set Marion’s husband free. But who is he, and where has he gone? To find out, the demure detective Miss Silver must track him down—or risk becoming a victim herself.

In Lonesome Road, a terrified young woman asks Miss Silver for help unmasking someone who has threatened her life. Rachel Traherne has been receiving menacing letters about her deceased father’s fortune. The first two letters were vague; the third said simply, “Get ready to die.”

Since then, Rachel has nearly been killed three times: first by a flight of sabotaged stairs, second by fire, and third by a box of poisoned chocolates. She fears the culprit may be a family member, jealous of her inheritance and willing to kill for it. But who could it be? Miss Silver is going to find out.

These charming traditional British mysteries featuring the unstoppable Miss Silver—whose stout figure, fondness for Tennyson, and passion for knitting disguise a keen intellect and a knack for cracking even the toughest cases—are sure to delight readers of Agatha Christie, Ellis Peters, and Dorothy L. Sayers.

Two titles in the Charley Sloan series by William Coughlin are $0.99 at Kindle US right now.

Shadow of a Doubt, #1
link: https://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Doubt-.../dp/B01E7KRY20
Spoiler:
Quote:
Charley Sloan thought it was all behind him — his career, his wives, his drink problem.

The colourful life he had once lived seemed a vague memory; he was now a regular at local AA meetings and was scraping by with work, using an office in a quiet and uneventful probate firm.

There were no glamorous women, no exotic holidays and no flash cars.

There was just Charley, sobriety, a rented studio and an old Ford Escort.

Life was lonely without booze, but it was stable. That is, until the arrival of an expensive looking client in his shabby lawyer’s office…

Robin Harwell — a sweetheart from High School with a favour to ask, and $20,000 to pay for it.

Defend her step-daughter? No easy task when the charge is murder, the victim her husband and the defendant has already confessed …

Angel — the rich little girl with celestial looks and a dead father’s blood on her hands. Innocent child, cool headed killer or completely psychotic? She probably needs a magician more than a lawyer …

Apart from the scandalous case they are facing, Robin and Angel seem to be coping remarkably well without Harrison Harwell. Their primary focus is on selling the shipping empire he left behind and making sure Angel doesn’t wind up in jail.

Why have they chosen Charley and what are they hiding?

Family feuds, secret sexualities and missing records add to the pressure Charley is under — this is the one chance he has to restore his name but he knows he has to take a risk and fight dirty if he wants to win.

With the publicity machine revving, the District Attorney prosecuting and the temptation to reach for the bottle growing, Charley must prove there’s a Shadow of A Doubt or else he’s sunk forever.

The Judgement, #3, US Kindle Countdown for about 1 1/2 more day
link: https://www.amazon.com/Judgement-Wil.../dp/B01H5AHI2U
Spoiler:
Quote:
As winter descends upon Detroit, ace lawyer Charley Sloan is drawn into a case that involves the bizarre murders of small children.

Someone is killing them, bathing their bodies and washing their clothes.

They are wrapping them in plastic, and placing them in the new-fallen snow.

Laid out like little angels, peacefully asleep.

The serial murders seem unsolvable, for the killer is elusive and very clever.

Detroit’s powerful police chief, Mark Conroy, asks Charley to defend him against charges that he stole millions from the department’s secret cash fund, a fund meant to pay off informants.

It’s a case that grabs headlines and is fraught with scandal, politics, and graft. Charley has to find the real embezzler before an innocent man is put away and his own career is ruined.

Once again, Charley finds himself torn between two big cases that hurtle him into a web of danger and deceit.

The Judgment is a compulsively readable novel by an acknowledged master.

The Last Billable Hour is the only (so far) title by Susan Wolfe. (Her Amazon author page mentions she has a new title coming out in October.) Per SYKM, it won the 1990 Edgar Award for Best First Novel and was a finalist for a couple of other awards. It's a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about four more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Billable.../dp/B01GEXIGXO

Spoiler:
Quote:
Welcome to the Silicon Valley law firm of Tweedmore & Slyde, where multimillion-dollar deals are the order of the day, ambition runs high, and stabbing a colleague in the back could be taken all too literally.

T&S is a hot firm making a bid to be a major national player when Leo Slyde—the company’s chief rainmaker, its king of the “billable hour”—is found stabbed to death in his corner office. It falls to T&S’s brightest, most unjustifiably insecure young associate Howard Rickover to conduct a risky “inside job” for homicide detective Sarah Nelson. But can Howard flush out a wily murderer among lawyers who do not make it their practice to be caught unprepared—and still keep up with an associate’s impossible workload?

"Susan Wolfe is at her best depicting—and spoofing—the glitzy law firm scene. A lawyer herself, she serves her damages with skill and obvious glee."
The New York Times Book Review

"A world of captivating corruption...with a delicate blend of malice, suspense and sharp psychology, Wolfe winds up her story with a scene that explodes a number of myths."
San Francisco Chronicle

Per its blurb, The Case of the Invisible Dog is the debut of the Shirley Homes series by Diane Stingley. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Case-Invisibl.../dp/B00NKDP2ES

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the start of a charmingly imaginative cozy series sure to delight fans of Carolyn Hart and Diane Mott Davidson, Diane Stingley introduces a blundering detective who believes herself to be the great-great-granddaughter of the legendary Sherlock Holmes.

After failing to launch her career as a Hollywood actress, Tammy Norman returns home to North Carolina, desperate for a regular paycheck and a new lease on life. So she accepts a position assisting Shirley Homes, an exceptionally odd personage who styles herself after her celebrated “ancestor”—right down to the ridiculous hat. Tammy isn’t sure how long she can go on indulging the delusional Shirley (who honestly believes Sherlock Holmes was a real person!), but with the prospect of unemployment looming, she decides to give it a shot.

Tammy’s impression of her eccentric boss does not improve when their first case involves midnight romps through strangers’ yards in pursuit of a phantom dog—that only their client can hear. But when the case takes a sudden and sinister turn, Tammy has to admit that Shirley Homes might actually be on to something. . . .

Praise for The Case of the Invisible Dog

“A protagonist with panache stars in a delightful twist on the Sherlockian tradition. This dazzling series debut is sheer fun.”—Carolyn Hart, bestselling author of the Death on Demand series and winner of the Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards

“Crazy-like-a-fox Shirley Homes is the funniest sleuth I’ve read in years, and she’s sure to steal the reader’s heart as she did mine. In Diane Stingley’s fresh, fabulous, and fast-paced The Case of the Invisible Dog, the game’s definitely afoot!”—Sarah Graves, bestselling author of the Home Repair is Homicide series

“Hold on to your deerstalker as Shirley Homes channels her great-great-grandfather and leads you and her own Watson on a crazy ride—that is, investigation—looking for both an invisible dog and a murderer. Woof!”—Marty Wingate, author of The Garden Plot

Black Plumes is a non-series title by Margery Allingham. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 5 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Plumes-.../dp/B00NSW6DAI

Spoiler:
Quote:
The slashing of a valuable painting at the renowned Ivory Gallery in London, one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world – followed by the murder of the proprietor’s son-in-law, Robert, sets the stage for another finely tuned Allingham mystery. The proprietor’s mother, 90-year-old Gabrielle Ivory, holds the key to the web of intrigue and danger that permeates the gallery.

Gabrielle Ivory was once a society beauty. But now, nearing 90, she’s largely disregarded by the younger members of the Ivory clan, who like to imagine Granny as rather a relic of a dead era. That’s a mistake, and it’s not their only one. A series of malicious attacks is threatening the Ivory Gallery in London. Robert Ivory and his high-strung wife, frantic to preserve the status-quo, want to chalk it all up to practical jokes gone wrong. But Gabrielle is not inclined to collude in this delusion.

A brilliant standalone mystery from the author of the beloved Campion books. Golden Age Crime at its intriguing best.

Quote:
Where better to get away with murder than a place where thousands are dying every day?

Deep in the trenches of Flanders Fields, men are dying in their thousands every day. So one more death shouldn't be a surprise.

But then a body turns up with bizarre injuries, and Sherlock Holmes' former sidekick Dr John Watson - unable to fight for his country due to injury but able to serve it through his medical expertise - finds his suspicions raised. The face has a blue-ish tinge, the jaw is clamped shut in a terrible rictus and the eyes are almost popping out of his head, as if the man had seen unimaginable horror. Something is terribly wrong.

But this is just the beginning. Soon more bodies appear, and Watson must discover who is the killer in the trenches. Who can he trust? Who is the enemy? And can he find the perpetrator before he kills again?
